Job summary

Memphis School of Excellence CENTRAL OFFICE in Memphis, Tennessee seeks a Substitute Teacher for a pool of substitutes. Normal school hours and a pay rate of $18–$20 per hour (max 8 hours/day) are noted. Starting date is To Be Determined, with role reporting to the Dean of Students.

The position requires a High School Diploma; prior experience with students is preferred and duties include following lesson plans and maintaining a conducive learning environment.

  • High School Diploma (Required).
  • Experience working with students (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Reports to school office at beginning of school day to pick up required materials/schedules of classes and at the end of the school day to return materials.
  • Follows sign out procedures as prescribed by the principal.
  • Carries out a program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for the lessons, units, or projects assigned.
  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly classroom. Straightens chairs, tables, clears chalkboard, etc.
  • Takes attendance in accordance with school procedures.
  • Indicates behavior expectations in accordance with MSE school policy to all students at the beginning of class.
  • Ensures that the students are never left unattended in the classroom.
  • May perform duties usually required of absent teacher such as lunchroom duty, hall monitoring, etc.
  • Knows emergency evacuation routes for the classrooms assigned.
  • Knows procedures for referring students who are disciplinary problems.
  • Knows school procedures and regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as directed by the principal or DoS.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the district.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both internal and external to the district.
  • Ability to organize special programs for the district.
  • Ability to use computer including software, database used by the district, spreadsheet and word processing software, calculator, copy machine and telephone.
  • Ability to analyze data.
  • Ability to use effective interview techniques, effective public speaking skills, and problem-solving skills.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Light Work: may require the occasional light lifting.
  • Nights and weekend activities will be occasionally required.
  • Position is in office setting and may involve prolonged work at a desk in one location.
  • Moderate travel is required.

Position Type: Substitute

Salary: $19 to $21 Per Hour
