Job summary

Washington State School for the Blind (WSSB) seeks substitute teachers to support educational instruction for blind and low-vision students at the Vancouver campus. Positions are open to multiple shifts and groups, reporting to the Director of On-Campus Programs.

Certified teachers or eligible candidates will join a dedicated staff, delivering academics, assistive tech, Braille, and daily living skills while fostering inclusive classrooms and engagement for all students.

Qualifications

  • Holds a valid Washington State Teaching Certificate or Emergency Substitute Certificate or is eligible to obtain one.
  • Demonstrates leadership ability and problem solving to manage classrooms; maintains positive learning environments by empathy, active listening, and openness; follows sub lesson plans.
  • Displays strong communication, adaptability, and interpersonal skills when working with students, staff, and administrators.
  • Must pass state and federal criminal background check.
  • Shows commitment to learning, flexibility, growth, and supporting educational needs of all students.
  • Ability to learn and take action to meet the needs of others.
  • Experience with the blind/VI is desired; classroom teaching experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide educational instruction to blind and visually impaired children on campus.
  • Contribute to academics, assistive technology, Braille, low vision devices, self-help skills, and daily living skills.
  • Collaborate with other WSSB staff to support student learning.
