Substitute Teacher - Early Childhood, Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary & Middle School

Reports to : Director of Early Childhood, Lower Elementary Team Leader, Assistant Head of MS or Assistant Head of School

Brief Description : Substitute Teacher will support co-teachers or cover teachers in specific program classrooms. The ideal candidate has experience with students 2-5, 6-9, 9-12,11-13 years old, and enjoys spending time with students in a specific age group or throughout the school, while firmly guiding them and keeping them on track with assignments.

As Needed Position. The hours are as needed Monday-Friday 8:00-3:15 pm, with many full-day opportunities.

Brooklyn Heights Montessori School offers a challenging and comprehensive curriculum built on the philosophy of Maria Montessori to children aged two years through eighth grade. Students work and learn in mixed-age classes led by teaching teams of thoughtful and well-trained professionals. The students have exposure to a full range of academic and artistic courses. BHMS also offers an after-school program and a summer day camp. The School is housed in a new modern facility in the Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn and is ideally located for convenient access to all parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Follow BHMS safety protocols listed in the Faculty and Staff Handbook (including but not limited to: proof of vaccination, negative COVID test, properly wearing face coverings, maintaining 6 feet of distance, frequent handwashing)
  • Serve as a substitute teacher when a teacher is absent
  • Work in partnership with the other teacher(s) in the room
  • Supervise students during lunch and outdoor play
  • Accompany students and teachers to the park and on neighborhood walks, if applicable
  • Have fun and be flexible in a fast paced environment

Skills or experience with any or all of the following are also desirable:

Zoom, Canvas, FlipGrid, and other online learning platforms. Demonstrated classroom experience preferred.
