As a substitute teacher you have control of your schedule - you can pick the days, times (half or full day), school and subject area of the job you choose to work! The daily rate of pay for substitute teachers is based on an individual's level of certification and past teaching experience, as noted below.
Substitute teachers also receive free lunch on days they are working at a school, as well as access to the district's Employee Assistance Program.
To substitute teach in Wyoming, you must carry a Professional Teaching Standards Board (PTSB) certificate. This permit is valid for five years and is eligible for renewal.
There are two ways to meet the requirements for a substitute teacher permit. To receive a permit, follow one of the paths listed below. Additional details can also be found at wyomingptsb.com.
Complete the Effective Substitute Teaching class (EDCI 1005). This course is offered through Sheridan College at the Johnson County Campus in Buffalo, Wyoming. The requirements for the course, syllabi, and sample schedule are listed below. This is a two-week course offered every fall and spring semester. Tuition for this course is $238 and requires an additional $100 fee payable to PTSB for the application and fingerprint fees. By the time you have completed the class, you will have met the requirements for the 24 hours of in-service training and 30 hours of classroom observation.
To instruct students and facilitate their learning in the absence of the regular teacher. Substitute teachers shall create a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; establish effective rapport with students; motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for education in accordance with each student's ability and establish good relationships with parents and other staff members.
