Position Title: Substitute Teacher and Enrollment Assistant

Salary Range: $38,000 to $40,000 annually

Status: Exempt, full time

Job Summary

Reporting to the principal, the incumbent will be responsible for substitute teaching in K-8 classrooms, teaching and supervising students in the event that their regular teacher is unable to lead class. Duties include managing classroom behavior, quickly interpreting lesson plans and creating reports to inform the students’ regular teacher of their progress spanning the core content areas of math, language arts, science, social studies as well as religion. The incumbent will also serve as an assistant in coordinating enrollment at the school. The incumbent is expected to communicate with all stakeholders (students, parents, staff, prospective families, etc.) as needed in order to support a solid learning environment and to facilitate the enrollment process for new families and students. This is a full-time, year-round position.

Responsibilities for Substitute Teaching

  • Follow lesson plans provided by the regular teacher to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience for students
  • Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment
  • Adapt teaching methods to fit the needs of each individual student
  • Supervise students in and out of the classroom, including in the halls, on the playground and in the cafeteria
  • Provide in-class and at-home assignments based on the available lesson plan
  • For long-term substitutes: develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with the regular teacher’s past lesson plans
  • Consistently create a high level of active student engagement and student-led learning
  • Communicate as needed with families
  • Supervise students during special activities
  • Care for and teach children of all socio-economic and academic levels and backgrounds
  • Establish a consistent disciplinary approach which promotes self-direction and confidence; set high standards for student behavior and manage inappropriate behavior effectively
  • Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process including iPads, Chromebooks, smart boards and online instructional platforms Provide remedial services to designated students.
  • Increase academic success through tutoring
  • Collaborate with other teachers or administrators to develop, evaluate, or revise school instructional programs.
  • Cooperate with school administration; work effectively with all staff members to promote positive working relationships
  • Complete additional administrative, operational, and professional responsibilities and duties as needed, before or after school hours


Responsibilities for Enrollment Assistant

  • Respond to enrollment inquiries in timely fashion
  • Communicate with prospective parents
  • Maintain administrative calendar for appointments
  • Set up meetings and tours of school with prospective students and parents
  • Follow up after visit
  • Enroll student after assessment and approval by administration
  • Register new enrollees in FACTS SIS
  • Maintain accurate enrollment list
  • Make sure all documents received from parents
  • Set up files for every student
  • Communicate with current families on enrollment procedures and dates
  • Produce timely announcements letting parents know about enrollment process.


Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate information clearly and effectively to students, staff and stakeholders.
  • Exhibit professional, friendly, courteous behavior with students, staff, prospective families/students and stakeholders.
  • Possess knowledge of software normally used in an office and a classroom setting and computer skills adequate to perform the tasks associated with the job, as well as an ability to learn new technologies as necessary.
  • Have good communication and organizational skills and be detail-oriented.
  • Be capable of multitasking, thinking creatively, and working with a sense of mission in order to do the work of the school.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information obtained during the performance of duties. Use appropriate discretion when sharing confidential information.


Demonstrate proper integrity, decorum and professionalism at all times in order to present Gesu School and Parish in a positive manner.
