To obtain a substitute certificate, you must register on the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's (DESE) website (www.dese.mo.gov). As you will learn on the website, there are multiple ways to qualify for a substitute teacher certificate, including completion of 36 semester hours at an accredited college or university, or completion of an approved substitute teacher training course. You will also need to have your fingerprints captured for a background check through the MACHS Fingerprint Portal (www.machs.mo.gov) using the West Platte registration number, 1625. You will also need to complete screening through the Missouri Family Care Registry.
If you have a current Missouri teaching certificate (any certification), you do not need a substitute certificate.
The current rate of pay for West Platte substitute teachers is $35/quarter-day; $70/half day; $140/full day; $150/long term-extended assignment.
