REQUIREMENT:To become a substitute teacher in Michigan, candidates must meet specific criteria set by the Michigan Department of Education. This includes completing at least 60 semester hours of college credit, with a "C" or higher, from a regionally accredited institution, ensuring a foundational level of higher education to manage a classroom and deliver content effectively.
Candidates must obtain a substitute teaching permit issued by the Michigan Department of Education. The permit is valid for one academic year and requires sponsorship by a school district, which submits the application on the candidate’s behalf. The current cost of the permit is $45 and is the candidates responsibility. Renewal is required annually.
SUMMARY: Instructs students in activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth in the subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able and responsible citizens.

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; age appropriate activities; content knowledge; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. RESPONSIBILITY
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; and tracking budget expenditures. WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires sitting, walking and standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment. Noise level may vacillate from quiet to loud in varying degrees.
