Job summary

Vancouver Public Schools is seeking qualified substitutes to join an ongoing roster for the 2026-2027 school year. Positions are open as needs arise, with non-exempt status and variable hours depending on assignment.

Qualified candidates should hold a Washington State teaching certificate appropriate for the assignment and have a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred). The district emphasizes collaboration, technology integration, and professional development.

Job description

We maintain an active roster of substitute employees and hire throughout the year based on operational needs. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, and qualified candidates will be contacted when opportunities are available.

Full Day - Monday(5 hours) & Tuesday-Friday(7 hours)/Half Day - 4 hours

Qualifications

  • Valid Washington State teaching certificate appropriate for the assignment
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning; Master's degree preferred
  • Successful teaching experience across all grade levels, preferred
  • Successful experience teaching across diverse populations, preferred
  • Willingness and desire to assist a teaching team in implementing an interdisciplinary instructional program
  • Familiarity with a wide variety of teaching techniques which are used to maximize student learning
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative environment in a program focused on improving student learning
  • Willingness and desire to collaborate with assigned Professional Learning Community, if requested
  • Cooperates as a professional team member, represents the best interests of the school, and accepts faculty responsibilities if requested
  • Sets an example for students in emotional stability, self-control, courtesy, and appearance
  • Ability to work in a semi-open or self-contained classroom
  • Knowledge of, or experience with, a variety of teaching strategies, i.e. cooperative learning, integrated curriculum, whole language, etc.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with students and their parents who are culturally, racially, and linguistically diverse
  • Advanced ability to use technology as an effective communication, planning, and instructional tool
  • Willingness to participate in professional development courses aligned with the school and district initiatives, if requested

Essential Functions

  • Teaches assigned content with a high degree of skill which may include an assignment to a combination grade-level classroom
  • Teaches in an instructional program that meets the students’ individual needs at their individual instructional level and makes modifications when necessary
  • Integrates technology into learning
  • Works as an enthusiastic part of a learning-centered environment believing that each student can learn
  • Ability to work with an educational team including directing the work of paraeducators
  • Uses the Professional Learning Community process to improve instruction, learning, and assessment, if requested
  • Maintains effective, positive classroom management
  • Provides a safe environment and handles discipline in a positive manner
  • Actively engage students in using technology in individual and collaborative learning activities
  • Works in a flexible and cooperative manner
  • Treats co-workers, supervisors, students, parents and others with dignity and respect at all times
  • Serves as a positive role model for students, and practices the behaviors that are expected of our students
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance and hours of operation as set by the assigned building/location to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve program requirements

Benefits/Compensation

  • Regular Rate: $28.00 (hourly), Enhanced Rate: $30.95 (hourly) (Must work 25 full days in a semester and will receive the enhanced rate the following semester).
  • Benefits: Employees who are anticipated to work at least 630 hours may be eligible for health, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, life, and disability insurance benefits. Detailed information, including further eligibility criteria, can be found here.
  • Time Off: Includes sick leave accrual of 1 hour per 40 hours worked.
