Lake Superior Academy is seeking on-call substitute teachers to support our K-5 students when a classroom teacher is absent in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Assignments are offered on an as-needed basis, and joining the pool does not guarantee a set schedule or days. As a substitute, you will follow lesson plans, support student learning and safety, and help maintain a calm, orderly classroom while adhering to school policies and safety procedures.

Qualifications

• On-call substitute teaching role for K-5 in Michigan.
• Must meet Michigan substitute permit requirements; permit process coordinated by LSA.
• Experience with children desirable but not required.
• Strong communication and adaptability for varied classrooms.

Lake Superior Academy is currently hiring an On Call Substitute Teacher. $14.50/hour.

Serving students in grades K-5 in Sault Ste. Marie, Lake Superior Academy is a tuition-free public charter school that combines Montessori-inspired practices with hands‑on, nature‑based learning. Position Summary
Lake Superior Academy is building a pool of dependable substitute teachers to support students and staff when a classroom teacher is absent. Assignments are offered on an as‑needed, on‑call basis; joining the pool does not guarantee a set schedule or number of days.

Responsibilities

• Follow the Classroom teacher's plans, classroom routines, and guidance from school staff.
• Support student learning, safety, and positive interactions throughout the school day.
• Help maintain a calm, orderly classroom and follow school policies and safety procedures.
• In Montessori classrooms, respect student independence, the prepared environment, classroom materials, and established routines; willingness to learn Montessori practices is important.
• Leave brief notes for the returning teacher or school staff about the day.

Cognitive Demands:

• Supervision of multiple students at once
• Establishing routines and procedures
• Maintaining a safe and orderly environment
• Create and implement instructional plans

Physical Demands:

• Occasionally lift/move objects weighing up to 25lbs
• Stand and walk frequently
• Occasionally sit on the floor or bend down/squat
• Withstand all demands presented by outside weather conditions at any time of the year
• Withstand a moderate noise level
• Be able to perform first aid/CPR if necessary
• Assist/lift students, as necessary

Qualifications:

• Minimum of 60 college credit hours. Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field preferred.
• Meet Michigan's requirements for the appropriate substitute permit. LSA will coordinate the permit process, and the required permit must be approved before an assignment.
• Previous experience working with children in an educational setting is highly desirable but not required.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to adapt quickly to different teaching environments and subjects.
• Patient, reliable, and flexible, with a genuine passion for education and student development.
