Job summary

Community Action in Washington County, Oregon, is seeking a compassionate Substitute Teacher for our Head Start program. You\'ll step into classrooms as needed, building caring relationships with children ages 0-5 and leading engaging, age-appropriate learning activities.

The role pays $22.86–$25.15 per hour, depending on qualifications. Requirements include a CDA or ECE certificate (or higher on Oregon Registry), and background checks.

Qualifications

  • Must have CDA/Preschool or Infant/Toddler credential or equivalent to be placed at Step 8+ on the Oregon Registry.
  • 1+ year teaching experience in a Certified Child Care Center or similar for ages 0–5.
  • Background checks and TB testing per Head Start regulations; valid Oregon driver\'s license or reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe, healthy, nurturing classroom environment.
  • Set up indoor/outdoor environments for daily activities.
  • Follow or develop lesson plans with the teaching team.
  • Care for children 0–3 by established routines.
  • Observe/record children's behaviors to identify strengths and growth areas.
  • Promote parental involvement in the classroom.
  • Assist with meal service as needed.

Job Position Description:

Are you a compassionate and resourceful individual dedicated to helping families thrive? We're seeking a Substitute Teachers for our Head Start Program. In this vital role, you'll step into classrooms as needed - building strong, caring relationships with kids and leading fun, age-appropriate learning experiences that help them grow. The hiring range is $22.86 – $25.15 an hour, depending on qualifications.

Abbreviated Duties List:
  • In collaboration with regularly assigned classroom staff, maintain a safe, healthy, orderly, and nurturing classroom environment organized into functional areas.
  • Assist in setting up environment (indoor/outdoor) for the activities of the day.
  • Utilize lesson plans as prepared by the teacher or collaborate with the teaching team in the development of lesson plans if none are available.
  • Follow established primary care-giving routines and appropriate practices with children ages 0-3 years.
  • Observe and record behaviors of children to assist the teacher in the identification of each child's strengths and areas to grow.
  • Provide an atmosphere that promotes and reinforces parental involvement in the classroom.
  • Assist with meal service as needed.
Abbreviated Requirements:
  • Education: Minimum of a Child Development Associate Credential (Preschool or Infant/Toddler) or an Early Childhood Education Certificate; or other sufficient to be placed at Step 8 or higher on the Oregon Registry.
  • Experience: Minimum of one year experience teaching in a Certified Child Care Center or comparable group care program in the care of children ages 0-5. Less than one year of experience may be accepted for applicants with higher levels of education beyond a CDA.
  • Must be able to successfully pass applicable background and Oregon Central Background Registry checks prior to new hire processing and beginning actual employment.
  • Completion of appropriate Fit for Duty and TB Testing according to Head Start regulations prior to date of hire.
  • Requires a valid Oregon driver's license, proof of auto insurance for private vehicle, and/or access to reliable transportation.
What Will Make You Stand Out:
  • Associate's Degree in the field of Early Childhood Education OR an Associate's Degree out of the field that includes coursework sufficient to be placed at Step 9 or higher on the Oregon Registry.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish, written and verbal.
  • 2+ years experience teaching children ages 0 - 5 years of age.
  • Prior Head Start program experience.
