• Ability and willingness to complete a background check.

Responsibilities

Description

The Substitute Teacher position fulfills the role of replacing a permanent classroom teacher during their absence and provides the same instructional and learning environment for the students as if the lead teacher were present. The Substitute can fulfill this role in Early Childhood, Lower School, Middle School, and Resource, or they can specify the age levels and/or divisions they are most equipped to support. This position requires someone who is flexible, patient, organized, warm, energetic and works well with children. The Substitute Teacher may be booked for coverage in advance or the day-of, depending on current needs across the school, and our Substitute Coordinators or Division Directors would be the point of contact when arranging coverage needs.

Requirements

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assumes and fulfills all daily teacher responsibilities in the absence of the lead teacher
• Adheres to the curriculum and lesson plans assigned by the regular teacher for whom he/she is substituting
• Maintains the same established culture, procedures, and routines in the classroom designed by the lead teacher
• Works collaboratively with teaching teams to ensure that all students are successfully progressing through each lesson taught
• If in Early Childhood classrooms, supports all childcare needs, including diapering, pottying, transitions/carrying children, etc.
• Models and encourages good behavior that promotes healthy child outcomes
• Oversees students inside and outside of the classroom including in the hallways, cafeteria, and at recess
• Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, materials, and equipment
• Complies with all school regulations and policies at all times
• Takes attendance and communicates behavioral support needs with Coordinators and Division Directors
• Reports all student injuries, accidents, illnesses, and discipline problems to teaching team and the Division Director
• Ensures the classroom environment is kept clean and orderly.

Qualification Requirements

• Associate's or Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field required
• Experience working with children from Preschool through 8th grade or experience working with a specified age group for which they plan to sub
• When applicable, ability to utilize educational technology & curriculum, student information systems (attendance) and to navigate in Google Workspace applications, including but not limited to Gmail, Calendar, and Drive (Docs, Sheets, and Slides)
• Familiarity with using copiers, printers, document cameras, and presentation screens
• A sense of integrity, ethics and ability to carry out responsibilities in accordance with the school’s policies and procedures
• Ability to cultivate positive relationships with children of all ages and to manage groups of children effectively
• Positive and effective communication skills to collaborate with all members of the St. George’s community
• Desire and intention to uphold St. George’s culture and expectations
• A growth mindset to learn and apply the best practices in child and youth development
• Ability and willingness to adjust structures and programs for children’s needs
• A flexible attitude toward work with a focus on contributing to the St. George's community
• If working in Early Childhood, ability to sit on the floor for long periods of time and lift up to 35 lbs.

Working Conditions / Physical Demands:

• Must be physically able to operate computers and office equipment.
• Occasional bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling and twisting; constant walking, speaking and listening; close visual attention to the computer.
• Occasional lifting up to 50lbs.
