Substitute School Nurse (Begins As Soon As Possible)

Francis W. Parker School is a renowned JK-12th grade independent day school. Founded in 1901 on the tenets of progressive education, the school currently enrolls 940 students and employs over 200 dedicated faculty and staff members who, in addition to assistant teachers, substitute teachers and coaches, work together to ensure that the School lives up to its Mission to “educate students to think and act with empathy, courage and clarity as responsible citizens and leaders in a diverse, democratic society and global community.”

Job Summary:

We are currently seeking an experienced Substitute School Nurse to cover planned and occasional same-day absences. This role will provide support with preventive health services that facilitate the student’s optimal physical, mental, emotional and social growth and development.

Essential Functions:

• Attend to the daily well-being of the students as needed
• Manage students’ chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma and seizure disorders
• Provide daily medications to students
• Administer provisions for first aid and emergency care; triage and determine the appropriate action to be taken and communicate information to parents and the related division office
• Consult with students, faculty, staff, and parents on health concerns they bring to the nurse
• Assist with updating medical records of students as needed
• Report the health status of individual students which may have a bearing on a child’s situation at school to administration
• Stay up to date on new policies, procedures and guidelines at city, district, state and national levels
• Assist in assuring that the school is properly reporting cases of communicable diseases
• Make recommendations on health and safety practices which need additional attention
• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum of two years clinical nursing experience as a Registered Nurse
• Current Illinois Registered Nurse License
• Current CPR Certification
• Prior experience working in a school environment or with children
• Ability to operate various diagnostic equipment
• Ability to work effectively without direct supervision
• Ability to relate well with students, staff, and public
• Ability to competently work with software such as Google Docs and Microsoft Excel
• Ability to learn new charting software to document medication administration, collect medical forms, troubleshoot parent questions, etc
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing

Compensation:

$35 per hour; this position is not eligible for benefits.
