JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: PARAEDUCATOR III

JOB DESCRIPTION:

To assist the classroom teacher with instruction and supervision of pupils in defined educational programs including reading, ESL, community day school, and special education in a school setting. The paraeducator serves as an instructional assistant and is intended to be assigned primarily to the direct instruction of students. Excellent reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation, computational and other core academic skills are required for this position.

QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Education: Hold a high school diploma or its equivalent and meet any one of three following requirements:
  • Complete at least 2 years (48 semester units) of study at an institution of higher education; or
  • Obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree; or
  • Meet a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal State or local academic assessment - - knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing reading or reading readiness, writing or writing readiness, and mathematics or mathematics readiness.
  1. Experience: Past experience in working with children and typing ability desirable.
  1. Knowledge: A basic understanding of the activities of a classroom and have the ability to work closely with children and adults. An ability to speak, read and write in Spanish is desirable.
TYPICAL DUTIES
  • Assists teachers with the presentation of learning materials and instructional activities; instructs small groups in reading, language, math and other subjects.
  • Tutors individuals and small groups of students; monitors and assists students through drill, study, and research activities after the teacher has provided lessons and instructions.
  • Assists in preparing teaching materials and learning activities, as directed.
  • Maintains class control in the absence of the teacher in case of emergency.
  • Assists teacher in preparation of instructional and testing materials; administers and scores tests; corrects papers.
  • Performs routine and record-keeping activities; takes attendance and maintains attendance records; fills out forms and applications as needed.
  • Prepares bulletin board material and decorates classroom; assists in maintaining a neat, orderly and attractive learning environment.
  • Attends and participates in faculty, staff, and in-service meetings if required.
  • Operates audiovisual equipment, computer, copying machines and other related equipment that aid the instructional program.
  • Supervises children at the playground, lunch area or bus loading area as needed.
  • Carries out other tasks which may be assigned by the principal.
IN ADDITION, AND NOT LIMITED TO THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS
SPECIAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Assists classroom teacher with special education programs for the learning disabled, developmentally delayed, acquired brain injury, severely emotionally disturbed, orthopedically handicapped, language handicapped, aphasic and deaf/blind students by performing paraprofessional activities.
  • Performs paraprofessional activities including tutorial, behavioral management, preparation of instructional materials, and feeding and toileting if indicated.
  • Observes students; answers questions; gives individual instruction; counsels and calms students as needed.
  • Assists in carrying out behavior modification programs including charting, timeout supervision and self-defense; assists teacher in maintaining classroom control and, as appropriate, during student mainstreaming in such activities as music, physical education, lunch, and recess.
  • Assists in training designated students in the physical skills necessary to care for their individual needs.
  • Assists students in use of bathroom facilities including lifting and moving where needed.
  • Adjusts special equipment such as wheelchairs, lifts, braces, and walkers; positions or repositions students in same.
  • Sets up meal trays; assists students with eating.
  • Assists students in changing clothing or putting on garments.
  • Use of appropriate techniques for the physical management of special education students is desirable.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by classroom teacher or principal.
ESL REQUIREMENTS
  • Assists classroom teacher in the implementation of individual educational plans for students experiencing difficulty understanding and using the English language.
  • Assists teachers with the presentation of learning materials and instructional activities; instructs small groups in listening, reading, writing and speaking English.
  • Coordinates ESL program, directly reporting to the principal.
  • Instructs non-English speaking students in English language and American culture.
  • Performs routine and record keeping activities for LEP/NEP students.
  • Serves as a translator.
  • Knowledge of instructional terminology, program philosophies, concepts, materials, methods, and procedures related to second language acquisition.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by the principal.
