The Palmerton Area School District is seeking substitute school nurses for the 2024-2025 school year. The daily rate is $135.00.

The nurse will provide preventive health services, maintain student health records, and support the district’s health program in accordance with Pennsylvania laws and district policies. Qualifications include active PA RN license, PDE Educational Specialist certification, preferably a BSN, and CPR/First Aid instructor certificates.

Qualifications

  • Certification as Educational Specialist by the Pennsylvania Department of Education is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide preventive health services and first aid for students.
  • Maintain Pennsylvania Department of Health health records for each student.

The Palmerton Area School District is seeking substitute school nurses for the 2024-2025 school year. Daily rate is $135.00.

Position Summary

To provide preventive health services to facilitate the student's optimal physical, mental, emotional, and social growth and development; carry out the district's health program, as defined by the Pennsylvania School Code, district policies, and the Pennsylvania Department of Health-Division of School Health regulations; strengthen the educational process through the utilization of proper health procedures and practices.

Qualifications
Education/Experience
  • Licensed Professional Nurse in Pennsylvania
  • Certification as Educational Specialist by the Department of Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, preferred
  • Current Red Cross CPR and First Aid Instructor Certificates
  • 3 to 5 years of experience in a complementary area of nursing, preferred

  • Ability to effectively communicate with and maintain working relationships students, parents/guardians, staff, administrators, and community members

  • Ability and knowledge to use the internet as an instructional aid and research tool

Physical
  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, sit, reach, communicate (vision, hearing, speech), carry or convey sufficient weight (10 pounds and up to 25 pounds) safely and effectively
  • Ability to independently ambulate in and around school buildings, locations associated with school events and field trips and office areas
  • Ability to effectively operate office equipment including, but not limited to, telephone system, computer, fax machines, copier, and calculator
Functions/Duties/Responsibilities
Essential
  • Assist and evaluate student illness and/or injury and provide first aid
  • Instruct students, parents/guardians, staff, or others regarding health issues when so assigned
  • Communicate with students and parents/guardians regularly about health issues
  • Review and maintain a Pennsylvania Department of Health comprehensive record for every student
  • Follow nursing care plans and emergency plans for medically-involved students
  • Provide for screening of vision, hearing, height, and weight of students
  • Provide for the regular medical and dental examinations of students
  • Assist in the medical examinations of student athletes
  • Plan, administer, and read TB tests and refer and follow up on reactors
  • Insure that all students have required immunizations
  • Participate with school staff in establishing a healthful school environment
  • Develop procedures and provide for emergency nursing management for injuries/illnesses
  • Provide consultation in the formation of health policies, goals, and objectives for the district
  • Investigate all student accidents
  • Develop individual health care plans and participate in 504 and IEP meetings as required
  • Work in conjunction with administrator, psychologist, and counselor to help resolve student issues
  • Make arrangements and assist district physician and dentist with exams
  • Conduct annual staff review of pertinent topics, i.e., blood borne pathogens and offer/inform of Red Cross First Aid Training
  • Assist in compliance with Pennsylvania School Code, Title 24 Education, with particular attention to Article VII "School Health Services" and with other federal, state, and local statutes including Palmerton Area School District School Board Policies
  • Participate as part of multidisciplinary committees as assigned
  • Manage independently all materials, paperwork, and equipment required for completion of medical tasks
  • Dispense medications as required and keep accurate records of all medications and related procedures within school and district protocol
  • Maintain updated website information and include current health forms
  • Assist in central registration process
  • Complete all Pennsylvania Department of Health reports in a timely fashion
  • Provide for personal professional growth through an ongoing program of improvement
  • Show evidence of satisfactory characteristic of personality, preparation, technique, and pupil reaction. (PDE 5501/PDE 426/437)
  • Assist in the development of a budget for health services
  • Maintain an inventory of school nurse/health materials
  • Publicize the services of the instructional materials center
  • Provide for the evaluation of the instructional materials services
  • Reflect on teaching others regarding health issues for improvement
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records
  • Contribute to the school and district by maintaining positive relationships with colleagues and participate in school and district projects
  • Participate in professional development activities and opportunities
  • Demonstrate professional behavior and appearance while performing all functions, duties, and job responsibilities
  • Adhere to all applicable Pennsylvania School Code and/or employer policies and procedures
