JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required. Post-secondary education in nursing program.

License/Certification

Georgia Licensed Practical Nursing or Registered Nursing license.

Candidate must possess demonstrated ability and professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, school personnel, and members of the community.

Work Experience

Minimum of 3 years of experience working as a nursing professional.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY

Assist students and staff with routine medical needs; respond to emergency medical situations at the school and assess for necessary next steps; assist in improving the health status of students by identifying and addressing health related issues at the school; provide programs that will assist in the well-being of students and staff.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Performs routine clinical services

• a. Manages all school medication administration per school procedure
• b. Evaluates and triage all sick/injured students providing emergency care and follow up.
• Trains volunteers and school personnel in clinic management routines and first aid.
• Provides for routine vision, hearing, dental and scoliosis screening for grade specific students with appropriate referrals and follow up
• Observes students for development and health problems and initiates the system for diagnosis, referral, treatment and rehabilitation
• Maintains communicable disease prevention and control through education, policy and enforcement
• Works closely with Health Department to monitor immunization records, eye, ear and dental certificates as mandated by state law
• Provides emergency crisis nursing care for physically, psychological ill and injured students/staff in the school
• Assists with physical examination for Special Olympic children
• Works closely with special education personnel, participating in the IEP process when appropriate and helps to implement individual health care based on prescriptive protocol provided by the student’s personal care physician
• Identifies, monitors and manages students with chronic diseases and disabilities, participates in developing and implementing 504’s as appropriate
• Provides ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school personnel and health agencies
• Provides direct health education, health counseling and health promotion to assist students and families in making decisions on health and lifestyles that affect health

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to talk, hear, stand, walk, and use hands to feel, and/or reach. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 35 pounds individually and 50 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
