Hot Bread Kitchen is seeking a Substitute Kitchen Assistant to support its culinary training programs. This part-time role involves hands-on kitchen assistance during training sessions, ensuring proper setup, cleanliness, and support for instructors. Ideal candidates have culinary experience and the ability to engage effectively with diverse participants.

We offer small business development programs, culinary skills training, and job placement, bolstered by individualized wraparound supportive services. Our small business program, HBK Incubates, supports entrepreneurs as they transform their food businesses into sustainable income sources. Culinary Fundamentals, our award-winning culinary training program provides access to high-quality jobs for those starting their careers in the food industry. Our upskilling programs enable incumbent workers to gain further skills leading to higher wages and career advancement. We work diligently alongside our network of over 200 food employer partners and more than 250 nonprofit and government partners to ensure our graduates are set up for success both at home and in their careers.
OPPORTUNITY
Hot Bread Kitchen is seeking a Substitute Kitchen Assistant to support the delivery of our workforce training programs on an as-needed basis to provide temporary support for our culinary team. Our hands-on kitchen training programs range from 5 to 8 weeks per cohort and are designed to prepare participants for entry-level jobs in the culinary industry. This position entails assisting the Lead Culinary Instructor and Assistant Instructor in all aspects of our program, including the setup, execution, and clean-up of the kitchen during training. The pace of this multifaceted role is fast-moving and requires the ability to effectively engage with diverse groups of program participants. The ideal candidate for this role is someone who has a background in education, particularly in the culinary arts and has worked in the culinary industry. This role will be supervised by the Lead Culinary Instructor.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Kitchen and Support
Pre-Training
Set up the kitchen, preparing each workstation with the supplies, food ingredients, and other materials needed, as instructed by the Lead Culinary Instructor and Assistant Instructor.
During Training
Provide hands-on, in-person kitchen support to Culinary Instructor and Assistant Instructor during the training.
Enforce proper food safety and sanitation in the kitchen.
Prepare ingredients and equipment for cooking demonstrations throughout the day.
Ensure walk-in and dry storage areas are kept clean and organized.
Assist in preparing family meal, as needed.
Post-Training
Ensure daily kitchen set up and clean up and preparation for the following day of training, including storage of leftover ingredients, organization of equipment and kitchen sanitation
Qualifications:
Passion for Hot Bread Kitchen’s mission
A minimum of 1 year experience in professional kitchens/production environments
Demonstrated ability to take instruction and ask clarifying questions
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people of diverse socioeconomic, cultural and economic backgrounds
Extremely organized and attentive to detail
Spanish speaking ability is a plus

LOCATION AND HOURS
This position requires in-person attendance at our facility in Chelsea Market or at one of our outposts. Hours and days will vary depending on the program’s need for coverage.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
This is a part-time temporary position. The rate of pay is $27 per hour.
