Job summary

Windsor Public Schools in Windsor, CT is seeking On-Call Substitute Food Service Workers to support district cafeterias. Duties include food preparation, serving, cashiering, cleaning, stocking, and other general cafeteria tasks. This is an on-call position with hours varying by school needs.

You will report to the Cook-Manager, Assistant Cook-Manager, and Food Service Director, and you'll help ensure safe, nutritious meals for students while maintaining sanitation and friendly service.

Qualifications

  • Previous food service, cafeteria, or food preparation experience preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Cashiering or POS experience preferred; training will be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation of daily menu items according to recipes, production guidelines, and established procedures.
  • Prepare appropriate quantities of food in a timely manner for each lunch service.
  • Follow proper food safety and sanitation practices at all times.
  • Assist with portion control and attractive presentation of food.
  • Help minimize food waste through proper preparation and production practices.
  • Follow National School Lunch Program requirements, including understanding Offer vs. Serve and the required meal components.
  • Set up and maintain hot and cold food service areas.
  • Serve meals to students in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Maintain proper food temperatures throughout meal service.
  • Ensure serving areas are stocked with appropriate utensils, condiments, and supplies.
  • Help maintain an efficient serving line and prevent unnecessary delays.
  • Operate the school meal point-of-sale (POS) system when assigned.
  • Accurately process student meal transactions.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student account information.
  • Provide courteous and professional service to students and staff.
  • Maintain clean and sanitary work areas, counters, serving areas, and equipment.
  • Wash and sanitize dishes, pots, pans, utensils, and food service equipment.
  • Operate commercial dishwashing equipment when assigned.
  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, and personal hygiene requirements.
  • Properly clean and maintain kitchen and cafeteria areas throughout the workday.
  • Assist with receiving, storing, and organizing food and supplies.
  • Follow FIFO (First In, First Out) procedures.
  • Maintain refrigerators, freezers, storage areas, and workspaces in a clean and organized condition.
  • Properly handle and store food to maintain quality and food safety.
  • Work cooperatively with the Cook-Manager and other Food Service staff.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with students, staff, and school personnel.

JOB SUMMARY

Windsor Public Schools is seeking reliable and dependable individuals to work as On-Call Substitute Food Service Workers throughout the district.

Substitute Food Service Workers provide support in school cafeterias and kitchens as needed to help ensure students receive safe, nutritious, and appealing meals in a clean and welcoming environment.

Assignments may vary based on the needs of the Food Service Department and may include food preparation, serving, cashiering, cleaning, dishwashing, stocking, and other general cafeteria duties.

This position reports to the Cook-Manager, Assistant Cook-Manager, and Food Service Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Food Preparation
  • Assist with the preparation of daily menu items according to recipes, production guidelines, and established procedures.

  • Ability and willingness to learn proper food preparation, food safety, sanitation, and cafeteria procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to interact appropriately and courteously with students, staff, and the public.
  • Cashiering or POS experience preferred; training will be provided.
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Must be able to lift and move food, supplies, and equipment as required for the position.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform physical tasks throughout the workday.
  • Must follow all district, state, and federal food safety requirements.
  • Food service sanitation certification is preferred and/or may be required based on position responsibilities.
WORK SCHEDULE

This is an on-call substitute position. Work is offered based on the needs of the Food Service Department and availability of the substitute.

Work hours may vary by school and assignment and generally fall within the school food service operating hours.

Availability during breakfast and/or lunch service is preferred.
