Job Title: Substitute Food Service Worker

Reports to: Manager or Coordinator

Bargaining Unit: AFSCME [90 days]

Hours & Location: Vary

Schedule: September 1 to June 30

Overview:

Founded in 1647, Boston Public Schools (BPS) is the oldest public school district in the country. With approximately 57,000 students from over 114 different countries, nearly 8,000 employees, and an annual budget of $973 million, BPS is the largest district in Massachusetts and one of the most diverse as well.

Currently BPS has 123 schools utilizing three food service delivery models. Forty six (46) schools have full service kitchens with full time cafeteria managers and subordinate staff.

Department Facts:
  • Mission: offer students safe, wholesome, nutritious, enjoyable meals to fuel academic excellence
  • Meals served: approximately 23,500 breakfasts and 35,600 lunches served daily; approximately 7-8,000 after-school meals served daily; 22,000 total summer meals
  • BPS utilizes Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which enables the district to provide free meals to all Boston students
Job Responsibilities:
  • Reports to work on time; as scheduled
  • Assists with food preparation
  • Prepares, serves and accounts for meals
  • Cleans kitchen equipment and work area, including floor
  • Sets up serving line and serves meals in accordance with portion size
  • Accurately fulfills school orders for shipment (pick, pack, ship)
  • Assembles various types of food and shipment
  • Marks/tags all packages shipped
  • Unpacks supplies and assists with stocking dry storage shelves and/or refrigerator shelves
  • Washes dishes, trays, flatware, pots, pans, utensils and dining tables
  • Maintains cleanliness of equipment, work area and flooring, in addition to work, preparation and break areas
  • Ensures adherence to food safety and facility safety standards
  • Performs quality control checks to ensure standards are met
  • Communicates issues with products or procedures
  • Works effectively in a team environment
  • Follows all safety and sanitation requirements
  • Completes all other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or G.E.D preferred
  • Able to accept instruction and work in a team environment
  • Effective communication skills
  • Physical abilities: walking, standing, reaching above shoulder level, stooping, lifting, carrying, bending, pivoting
  • Capable of sitting, standing and walking for extended periods
  • Ability to follow directions well
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Flexible, multitasks effectively, maintains high productivity
  • Reliable
  • Able to work full day in multi-temp environments without restrictions
  • Strong team collaboration skills

Terms: $17.59 per hour

Food Services/Cafeteria Workers Contractual Hourly
