Job summary

Oglethorpe County Schools seeks a Substitute School Bus Monitor to assist the bus driver in providing safe, orderly transportation for students. You will help students board and exit, monitor behavior, and promote a safe environment on the bus.

The role supports the driver, follows district procedures, and assists with routine duties to ensure efficient transportation operations. This is a substitute/as-needed position based in the school system.

Qualifications

Position Title: Substitute School Bus Monitor

Department: Transportation

Reports To: Transportation Director

Work Calendar: Substitute/As Needed

Position Summary

To assist the school bus driver in providing safe, orderly, and efficient transportation of students to and from school and school-related activities. The substitute bus monitor helps maintain appropriate student conduct, assists students when entering and exiting the bus, and promotes a safe transportation environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Student Safety

• Assist in ensuring the safety and welfare of students during transportation.
• Help students safely board and exit the school bus.
• Monitor student behavior and maintain order while the bus is in operation.
• Ensure students remain seated and follow established transportation rules.
• Assist students with special needs as required by Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), transportation plans, or district procedures.
• Assist in the safe transportation and supervision of medically fragile students following established transportation plans, health care plans, IEP requirements, district procedures, and applicable training.
• Monitor students for signs of distress, promptly communicate concerns to the bus driver and appropriate school personnel.
• Observe and report unsafe conditions, accidents, injuries, or student concerns to the bus driver and appropriate supervisors.
• Respond appropriately during emergencies including emergency evaluations within the scope of assigned responsibilities and training.

Student Supervision

• Maintain positive relationships with students while enforcing district transportation rules.
• Supervise student conduct in a fair and consistent manner.
• Report disciplinary issues to the bus driver and transportation supervisor as necessary.
• Encourage respectful behavior and a safe bus environment.

Operational Support

• Follow all district transportation procedures, policies, and safety regulations.
• Assist the driver with route-related duties as appropriate and permissible.
• Complete required documentation and incident reports accurately and promptly.
• Attend required training sessions and meetings.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding students and school operations.
• Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Qualifications

Education

• High school diploma or GED preferred.

Experience

• Experience working with children or youth preferred.
• Experience in school transportation, childcare, customer service, or related fields is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to supervise and interact effectively with students of various ages.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately during emergencies.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and the public.
• Knowledge of student safety practices and behavior management techniques.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, and lift up to 25 pounds.
• Ability to ascend and descend bus steps repeatedly.
• Ability to assist students during loading, unloading, and emergency situations.
• Ability to work in varying weather conditions and temperatures.
• Sufficient visual and auditory ability to monitor student behavior and safety.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed primarily on school buses and at school locations.
• Exposure to noise, weather conditions, vehicle vibrations, and frequent student interaction.
• May be required to work irregular schedules based on transportation needs.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Board of Education policies, district procedures, and the established employee evaluation system.
