  • Inspects bus interior and exterior for safety and cleanliness; logs maintenance and fuel data as required.
  • Operates bus safely under all weather conditions and complies with traffic regulations; uses stop sign and flashing lights when stopping.
  • Ensures student safety during loading and unloading and escorts students across streets or highways.
  • Documents incidents and unruly behavior; reports delays and all accidents.
  • Reports defects to the Director or Shop Mechanic and prepares bus for maintenance and repairs.
  • Assists students with disabilities and secures wheelchairs and car seats; follows procedures for bus inspections and daily checks.

BUS DRIVER Job Description

MAJOR FUNCTION

Skilled work in the operation of light and heavy school buses in transporting students on scheduled routes and/or on all types of trips in support of district-approved activities, both within and outside the school district boundaries. This position safely operates school buses under all types of weather conditions, including, but not limited to fog, rain, sleet, and snow.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Transports students to and from school, following a preplanned route according to a definite time schedule.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and the public.
  • Successfully completes school bus driver training programs and courses established by the Arkansas Department of Education and Heber Springs School District.
  • Regulates heating equipment and ventilation of bus for comfort of passengers.
  • Drives bus carefully and safely in compliance with all traffic regulations, such as but not limited to; before stopping, operate stop sign and flashing lights on bus to alert traffic.
  • Assumes responsibility for the safety of school children in loading, unloading, and transporting students on scheduled routes and/or on all types of trips in support of district-approved activities.
  • Instructs children in safety precautions and practices. Signals children when to cross street or highway and assures that children are safely across upon departure from bus.
  • Maintains discipline; documents unruly behavior on conduct report to supervisor.
  • Reports delays and ALL accidents
  • Keeps legible dated operational records and makes accurate simple reports. Mileage and gallons MUST be logged at each re-fueling.
  • Reports defects or problems with vehicle in inspection report to Director or Shop Mechanic.
  • Assures bus meets regular maintenance schedules.
  • Assists children with disabilities in and out of the vehicle; physically maneuvers wheelchair students up and down ramp or automatic lift; positions students in their car/infant seats; fastens harnesses and belts; provides assistance to students in evacuating bus; secures students to wheelchairs/car seats and wheelchairs/car seats to bus. Has no physical limitations which would prevent satisfactory performance of job duties.
  • Follows a set procedure to check the bus each morning ensuring it is in proper working order including checking for proper maintenance and safety; at the conclusion of the day’s route, prepares bus for the following day including checking fluid and fuel levels and replacing as needed, cleaning inside and outside of bus, reporting need for maintenance and repair work, and securing and locking bus; prepares work orders for repairs; takes bus to designated shop for major maintenance and repairs; inventories specialized equipment, prepares reports and maintains records including route books, check-out and mileage sheets, fuel/mileage log, student/family information and records.
  • Reports any changes to personal driving record and participates in random drug test.
  • Clean the interior after each route or round trip and exterior as needed.
  • Driver must inspect interior for lost items and sleeping or lost students at every destination arrival prior to leaving bus.
  • Performs related work as required.
