Summary: Position is responsible for operating a school bus and transporting students and other authorized personnel safely and efficiently over specified routes, to and from schools, and various other activities. Conducts pre‑trip inspections, observes safety regulations, enforces student discipline, and performs related duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Checks bus vehicle before each operation for mechanical defects, fuel, and safety equipment; notifies the proper authority in case of mechanical failure or lateness.
  • Keeps the bus clean inside and out.
  • Drives the bus on assigned route, taking on and dropping off passengers only at authorized stops; transports only authorized students and personnel.
  • Obeys all traffic laws and mandatory safety regulations for school buses.
  • Interacts with students, staff, and community members on a positive basis.
  • Maintains discipline on the bus; reports undisciplined students and completes required forms.
  • Exhibits responsible leadership on out‑of‑district trips.
  • Reports accidents and completes required reports.
  • Maintains current route maps and notifies office staff of changes.
  • Maintains daily logs, student counts, and other required data.
  • Secures wheelchairs, car seats, and other restraining devices as needed.
  • Conducts semi‑annual evacuation safety drills and implements evacuations in emergencies.
  • Participates in all required training.
  • Undergoes drug screenings when required.
  • Maintains a CDL driver’s license as required by the State Department of Transportation.
  • Regulates bus temperature for passenger comfort.
  • Enforces seating charts as instructed by Transportation Director.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with passenger endorsement (P).

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Duties are performed on a school bus. Employees are frequently exposed to loud noise, fumes, airborne particles, noxious odors, vibrations, traffic, outside weather conditions, and moving mechanical parts. Employees must sit, use hands and arms, climb, bend, stoop, kneel, talk, and hear. They must be physically able to perform emergency evacuation procedures and communicate orally via two‑way radio with dispatch and emergency services while the bus is in motion. Visual requirements include close, distance, night/dusk, color, and peripheral vision.
