JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: Athletic Trainer – SUBSTITUTE ($50 per hour as needed)
Reports to: Supervisor of Athletics
Supervises: Students, student trainers, and staff under his/her jurisdiction
Qualifications:
- National Athletic Training Association (NATA) Certificate
- New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners Athletic Trainer License
- Current CPR certification
- New Jersey Department of Education issued Athletic Trainer Certificate
- Valid driver’s license required
- Member in good standing with the NATA, the local NATA District and New Jersey Athletic Trainers Association
- Two years successful experience as an athletic trainer or in a similar capacity preferred
- Possess basic technological skills as required by the position
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in the English language, both orally and through written expression
- Must complete required health examination(s) and immunization(s)
- Must pass required criminal history background check
- Provide proof of U. S. citizenship or legal resident status

Performance Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the safety and well‑being of students
- Uphold and enforce school rules, Board policies, and federal/state laws
- Communicate professionally within the school community
- Operate within the limitation of his/her license and abilities
- Administer first aid/CPR when necessary and/or arrange for medical care
- Work closely with all coaches regarding conditioning, first aid, re‑conditioning after injuries, and providing for the well‑being of all athletes in the program
- Apply protective or injury‑preventive devices (strapping, bandaging, braces, etc.)
- Counsel and advise athletes and coaches on matters pertaining to conditioning and training, such as diet, rest and rehabilitation
- Advise coaches when an athlete may return to activity and to what level
- Work cooperatively with and under the direction of the physician with regard to: treatment of athletic injuries, re‑conditioning procedures, operation of therapeutic devices and equipment, fitting of braces, guards and other devices, referrals to the physician
- Work cooperatively with the school nurse regarding filing of accident reports, doctor’s notes, and insurance forms; maintain accident reports and records of injuries
- Supervise the athletic training room (establish rules, regulations, procedures; keep the room orderly and sanitary; establish daily hours; submit annual budget and order supplies/equipment; make medical kits available for each in‑season team; attend practice sessions and games as required, may travel to out‑of‑state events)
- Professional development: keep informed about latest equipment and information in sports medicine, maintain certification, participate in continuous study and research, attend conferences and workshops to maintain and enhance professional competence
- School and community relations: advise parents regarding the athlete’s care and injuries; liaise with school nurse and coaches; interpret the athletic training program to administrators and staff; facilitate effective communication about the program; respond appropriately to concerns from public and staff; maintain records accurately; learn and apply new job skills; perform duties with minimal supervision; organize responsibilities
