Job summary

LS Power is seeking an entry-level Relay/Substation Technician in Amarillo, TX to gain hands-on experience in relay technology and substation operations. You will support installation, testing, and maintenance of high-voltage equipment under supervision.

Ideal candidates have a basic electrical understanding, a safety-first mindset, and strong willingness to learn. This role offers on-site training and opportunities to grow within our regulated transmission business.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a technical or vocational training program as a relay or substation technician is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with installation and maintenance of electrical relay systems, protective relays, control systems, and substation equipment.
  • Support testing, calibration, and troubleshooting of protective relays and substation equipment.
  • Learn to read and interpret relay control drawings, schematics, and substation electrical diagrams.
  • Operate electrical test devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, meggers, and related equipment.
  • Conduct routine inspections of substation equipment and transmission line structures.
  • Support preventive maintenance to extend equipment life and prevent failures.

About the Role:

This position supports the regulated electric transmission business of LS Power. Specifically, this position will be based in Amarillo, Texas. This entry-level position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands‑on experience and develop skills in both relay technology and substation operations. The candidate will support both operations and maintenance of high-voltage substation equipment including SF6 breakers, power transformers, disconnect switches and control building equipment.

Responsibilities

What you will do:

  • Assist with Installation and Maintenance:Help install and maintain electrical relay systems, protective relays, control systems, and substation electrical equipment.
  • Testing and Calibration:Support the testing, calibration, and troubleshooting of protective relays and substation equipment.
  • Read and Interpret Schematics:Learn to read and interpret relay control drawings, schematics, and substation electrical diagrams.
  • Use of Testing Equipment:Operate electrical test devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, meggers, and specialized substation testing equipment.
  • Troubleshooting:Assist in identifying and resolving issues with relay systems and substation electrical systems.
  • Routine Inspections:Conduct regular inspections of substation equipment and/or transmission line structures to ensure proper functioning and identify potential issues.
  • Preventive Maintenance:Support preventive maintenance tasks to extend the lifespan of substation\transmission line equipment and prevent unexpected failures.
  • Documentation:Maintain accurate records of tests, calibrations, maintenance activities, and inspections.
  • Follow Safety Protocols:Adhere to all safety procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Training and Development:Participate in training programs to develop skills and knowledge in relay technology and substation operations.
  • Support Experienced Technicians:Work under the guidance of experienced relay and substation technicians to gain hands‑on experience and knowledge.
  • Operate Equipment:Operate vehicle combinations with gross vehicle weight up to ratings of 26,000 pounds or more, including bucket trucks and cargo trailers.

Routinely works in an energized, substation environment but will also have a workspace in a corporate office with a warehouse/relay lab/workshop and remote inventory material yard. The Company will supply a truck, tools and all required PPE. The individual may have occasional visits to other regional operating facilities and field sites for training purposes. Working hours are generally normal but circumstances or deadlines may dictate extended hours to complete required tasks. Operates computer equipment, uses phone daily, and frequently travels regionally in accordance with operational demands
