SteelCon is seeking a Substation Structural Designer in Houston, TX. This full-time, hybrid role blends remote flexibility with in-office collaboration on high-voltage substations and utility projects across North America.

You will lead structural design work, run calculations, refine layouts, and coordinate with fabrication teams to ensure production-ready outcomes. Mentorship and proposal input are also expected as part of our collaborative, growth-focused culture.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's in Civil/Structural Engineering or related field.
• 5+ years structural steel design experience.
• Experience in industrial, utility, or heavy steel environments.
• Knowledge of steel design and load analysis.
• Experience with structural calculations and FEA tools.
• Microsoft Office proficiency.
• Strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Designs and analyzes substation structural layouts, dead-end supports, and gantries.
• Collaborates with detailers, engineers, and fabrication teams to ensure production-ready designs.

THE TYPE OF SUBSTATION STRUCTURAL ENGINEER WE'RE LOOKING FOR

WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE OUR SUBSTATION STRUCTURAL ENGINEER

This is a full-time hybrid design role based in Houston, TX, combining remote flexibility with in-office collaboration and project coordination.

Your day starts by tackling structural designs for high-voltage substations while analyzing steel systems, running calculations, and refining layouts for complex structures such as dead-end supports and gantries. As the day progresses, you shift into collaboration mode, aligning with detailers, engineers, and fabrication teams to ensure designs are both structurally sound and production-ready. You'll review shop drawings, troubleshoot issues on the fly, and contribute to value engineering initiatives that improve efficiency and reduce costs. Between project meetings and QA/QC reviews, you'll also mentor junior designers and contribute insights to proposals-making you a key player not just in design, but in the overall success of every project you touch.
