Job description

JOB SUMMARY:

Race Rock is seeking an accomplished Substation Steel Engineering Manager to build and lead a new Substation Steel Engineering Department within our Utility Structures Division. Reporting to the Vice President of Engineering, you will define the department’s engineering standards and direct all design and drafting activity for substation steel structures. This is a ground-floor leadership role for a licensed PE who wants to shape a team and a discipline from the start.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Stand up and grow the Substation Steel Engineering Department — hiring, onboarding, and developing engineering and drafting staff.
  • Lead and mentor a team of up to five direct reports, providing performance feedback and professional development.
  • Direct, review, and approve the design and analysis of substation steel structures up to 500kV — tapered tubular A-frames, H-frame dead-ends, static masts, low-profile structures, bus supports, and switch stands.
  • Oversee engineering calculations, drawing packages, and sealed deliverables.
  • Establish department workflows, design standards, methodologies, tools, and best practices that support scalable growth.
  • Coordinate team resources to meet project schedule, quality, and budget targets.
  • Prepare and approve proposal packages, technical scopes, and design estimates.
  • Partner with project management, sales, drafting, and manufacturing teams, and serve as the department’s technical lead with utilities, consultants, and EPC partners.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license — Texas preferred, or obtainable by reciprocity within six months.
  • 8+ years of high-voltage substation steel design experience.
  • Expert knowledge of ASCE 113, AISC 360, ASCE 7, and ASCE 48.
  • Proficiency with STAAD.Pro, RISA-3D, and RISAConnection.
  • Experience with structural steel detailing, bolted and welded connection design, and fabrication-drawing interpretation.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop engineering standards and workflows and to mentor junior staff.
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering.
  • 2+ years of engineering management or technical leadership experience.
  • Working knowledge of PLS-POLE, Mathcad Prime, and NESC.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES OF THE ROLE:
  • Join a well-established, fast-growing business with a strong reputation and a loyal customer base.
  • Build a department from the ground up, with the autonomy to shape how the team scales and real influence on company strategy.
  • Work directly with the VP of Engineering as Race Rock invests to aggressively expand its Utility Structures division — with the ambition to quadruple division revenue in the coming years.
WHY RACE ROCK
  • Opportunity to join a well-established business with a strong reputation and customer base.
  • Work directly with the Vice President of Engineering on the continued build-out of an already thriving in-house engineering department, with the autonomy to shape how the team scales and a significant impact on future strategy for the overall business.
  • The business has the ambition and investment to quadruple the Utility division revenue in the coming years.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience, plus performance-based bonus eligibility.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Paid time off and paid holidays.
  • Professional development support, including PE license renewal and continuing-education reimbursement.
