The Substation Senior Engineer – System Protection will be part of an electric substation design team and will be responsible for the engineering and design of multiple projects ranging from small, fast-paced assignments to large, complex substations. This role applies advanced engineering knowledge to system protection design, including development of protection schemes, relay applications, and coordination studies for facilities ranging from 12kV to 500kV.
As a Substation Senior Engineer – System Protection, you will apply NESC, NEC, IEEE, and applicable NERC standards to independently perform protection studies, develop relay settings, and produce detailed design deliverables. This role also supports client coordination, mentoring, and construction activities to ensure reliable, compliant, and high-quality system performance.

Job Duties
- Lead the execution of substation system protection scope, maintaining ownership of technical decisions, deliverable quality, and study accuracy.
- Develop and approve protection schemes and relay settings for transmission and distribution systems, ensuring coordination, selectivity, and reliability.
- Serve as technical lead for system protection design, providing direction on protection schemes, relay applications, coordination philosophies, and system performance.
- Perform, review, and oversee protection studies, including short circuit analysis, relay coordination, CT saturation, and event analysis.
- Develop and review protection and control deliverables, including one-line diagrams, three-lines, schematics, logic diagrams, and associated documentation.
- Support development of protection specifications, settings files, and device configurations aligned with project and client requirements.
- Apply applicable codes and standards, including NESC, NEC, IEEE, and NERC PRC requirements (e.g., PRC-019, PRC-024, PRC-025, PRC-027).
- Coordinate across disciplines (P&C, telecom, transmission, distribution) to ensure complete and integrated system protection solutions.
- Serve as a key technical interface with clients, supporting meetings, design reviews, and resolution of protection-related issues.
- Lead QA/QC efforts for protection studies, relay settings, and design deliverables to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Provide technical mentorship and training to engineers and designers, including guidance on protection studies, relay applications, and industry practices.
- Support project execution through task management, coordination, and adherence to project schedules and deliverable milestones.
- Support procurement and construction phases, including relay settings implementation, testing, commissioning, and field support.
- Participate in and lead site visits, commissioning efforts, and testing activities to validate protection design and system performance.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by supporting updates to protection standards, templates, tools, and processes.
Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
- Typically 5+ years of relevant experience in substation system protection or protection and control engineering.
- Demonstrated expertise in system protection, including relay settings development, coordination studies, and protection scheme design.
- Advanced knowledge of power system analysis methods, including fault analysis, relay coordination, and system performance evaluation.
- Strong understanding of applicable industry standards (e.g., NESC, NEC, IEEE, NERC PRC requirements).
- Proficiency with protection analysis software (e.g., ASPEN OneLiner, ETAP, PowerFactory, CYME or similar).
- Proven ability to independently perform complex engineering work and review deliverables with high technical accuracy.
- Ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and support integrated project execution.
- Strong communication skills with experience supporting client interactions and technical discussions.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments while maintaining quality and schedule commitments
For Preferred Consideration (Not Required)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain.
- Experience with renewable integration, SCADA, communications, and advanced protection schemes.
- Experience supporting testing, commissioning, and field implementation of relay settings.
- Familiarity with utility-specific protection philosophies across multiple clients.
- Experience contributing to proposals, technical scopes, and project estimating.
