Overview

Our Substation Group is at the forefront of the energy transition, tackling real‑world challenges as the grid evolves. With the rapid growth of smart home technology, electric vehicles, battery energy storage, and renewable energy sources, we’re facing a new era of power systems—one defined by multi‑directional power flows, advanced data acquisition, and dynamic load management. Join us as we help redefine how energy is delivered, managed, and sustained for generations to come. Due to continued growth, our Power Delivery group is seeking a Substation Engineer – Protection and Controls in one of the following office locations:

  • Dallas, TX
  • Houston, TX
  • Orlando, FL
  • Tampa, FL
  • Palm Beach Gardens, FL
  • Overland Park, KS
Responsibilities

Imagine a day where you’re designing the backbone of the power grid—drafting substation layouts, running protection and grounding analyses, and fine‑tuning relay settings that keep energy flowing safely. You collaborate with engineers across disciplines, solve real‑world challenges, and see your designs come to life in the field. Every detail you contribute will help power entire communities—safely, reliably, and sustainably.

  • Substation Design & Drafting: develop electric substation drawings, including single‑line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, control panel layouts, and control building layouts. Work closely with the Civil Engineering department to develop substation foundation and structure drawings.
  • Engineering Analysis & Calculations: perform substation design calculations and analyses such as ground grid analysis and design, lightning protection, voltage drop, and conduit fill. Perform analysis for protective relaying settings (e.g. short‑circuit, coordination and protection) and PT and CT sizing determinations (e.g. CT saturation, PT and CT ratio).
  • Protection & Control: develop relay settings for various protective features with the aide of other departments and external vendor relay application engineers.
  • Technical Documentation & Specifications: develop technical equipment and construction specifications and work scopes.
  • Collaboration & Quality Assurance: work closely with peers to ensure accurate and on‑time delivery of electrical design that meets client and industry standards, specifications, and good engineering practices.
  • Field Support: provide on‑site technical support for select ENERCON clients during construction and commissioning as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited university.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in Substation engineering, with a primary focus on executing protection and control projects. Non‑senior roles will be considered with 3+ years of experience.
  • Familiarity with relay protection schemes and relay logic.
  • Basic understanding of SCADA design.
  • Experience with SEL AcSELerator, MicroStation, and AutoCAD.
  • Strong familiarity with NESC, IEEE, and other applicable codes and standards.
  • Willingness to enter energized electric substations with proper training and PPE.
  • Must be self‑driven in time management to meet deadlines and provide accurate deliverables, with the ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Must be proficient with typical office software including Microsoft Windows and Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Willingness to travel for client site visits and project meetings.
Preferred Qualifications / Skills
  • Experience working in electric utility industry, preferably in fast‑paced consulting environment.
  • 500kV substation engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, with active NCEES record for reciprocity.
