Job summary

HDR is seeking a Substation Project Engineer to join our Power Delivery team in Kansas City, MO. The role focuses on HV substation physical and protection & control designs, grounding, and related electrical studies, with collaboration across Civil/Structural, Networks, and Transmission teams.

Qualified candidates hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and a PE/P.Eng license, with 3+ years of project execution in the Power Delivery/Substation sector and experience at an engineering

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
• Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license
• 3+ years’ experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector
• Previous experience with an engineering consulting firm

Responsibilities

• Support preparing scopes, schedules, and budgets, and ensure that schedules and budgets are met
• Develop and deliver physical substation designs including yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bills of material
• Develop and deliver protection and control designs including panel arrangements, one line/single line, three line, AC/DC schematics, equipment wiring and relay panel wiring
• Prepare electrical calculations for studies and reports (grounding, lighting protection, AC/DC load studies, etc.)
• Prepare equipment specifications for procurement and/or factory acceptance testing
• Coordinate design activities with other departments (Civil/Structural, Networks, Transmission Line, etc.)
• Communicate and coordinate project activities with manager, clients, and others as needed
• Work independently and may direct, mentor, train, and/or supervise efforts of less-experienced EITs and/or Designers
• Conduct QA/QC on the work of other Engineers, Project Coordinators or Designers, or BIM Technicians as needed
• Perform other duties as needed

Responsibilities

• Support preparing scopes, schedules, and budgets, and ensure that schedules and budgets are met
• Understanding, developing, and delivering physical substation designs including yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bills of material

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
• Foundational expertise in high voltage substation design, including both physical and protection & controls design
• A minimum of 3 years’ experience in project execution within the Power Delivery, Substation Sector
• Previous experience with an engineering consulting firm

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering
• Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license
• Previous experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector
• Computer skills in Microsoft Office as well as standard Power Market Sector design software (examples include PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, and Revit)
