Job summary

Dashiell is seeking a Project Engineer to lead engineering and design for high-voltage substations. The role requires coordinating a multidisciplinary team and managing schedules and budgets for multiple projects from our Raleigh, NC office.

You will ensure NEC/NESC/IEEE/ANSI standards are met and act as the primary client and vendor liaison. The ideal candidate has a PE license, a power-focused electrical engineering background, and at least six years of substations experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university; a power focus is preferred.
  • Must be a licensed Professional Engineer; if registered out of state, license must be obtained within 18 months of hire.
  • Minimum of 6 years of direct experience and proven knowledge in high voltage (138kV and above) electrical substation engineering and design.

  • Supervise and coordinate all project activities for on-time completion.
  • Assign tasks to project design team and modify design documents as needed.
  • Develop one-line diagrams, electrical plans, and specifications.

Primary Function:

The Project Engineer performs engineering and design duties as well as organizes all activities required for the development and implementation of high voltage electrical substation projects across a multidisciplinary team of drafters, designers, and various levels of engineers. The Project Engineer drives project schedules and budgets for multiple projects at a time and functions as a Company contact for clients and vendors. The position will be based in our Raleigh, NC office located at 11000 Regency Pkwy, Suite 107 Cary, NC 27518 and will report to Dashiell’s Vice President of Engineering.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Ensure that projects are managed to meet project quality, schedule, and profitability objectives.
  • Supervise and coordinate all project activities to ensure on-time completion.
  • Assign tasks to project design team based on project needs.
  • Work with project team to create or modify all design documents.
  • Ensure project team is using project-specific standards and that the design effort is progressing in the most efficient manner possible.
  • Develop one-line diagrams, electrical plans, and specifications for a project.
  • Apply engineering application software to complete tasks such as ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, load flow, and short circuit studies.
  • Perform engineering and design functions as necessary to meet project schedules.
  • Communicate and coordinate project activities with customer representatives, project team, and management.
  • Prepare, coordinate, and track project schedules and budgets; ensure projects remain within allotted budgets and schedules and address deviations with management.
  • Ensure project team applies engineering standards including NEC, NESC, IEEE, and ANSI.
  • Properly use the document management system.
  • Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of his/her work.
  • Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party.
  • Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments.
  • Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested.
Minimum Qualifications / Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent degree from an accredited university; a power focus is preferred. Must be a licensed Professional Engineer; if registered in a state other than where the engineer will practice, the employee must be able to obtain a license within eighteen months of date of hire. A minimum of 6 years of direct experience and proven knowledge in high voltage (138kV and above) electrical substation engineering and design is required.

Required

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of high voltage electrical substation components and their functions at 138kV and above.
  • Extensive knowledge of AC/DC fundamentals.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of three-phase power systems, per-unit mathematics, and symmetrical components.
  • Knowledge of common engineering application software.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of engineering standards including NEC, NESC, IEEE, and ANSI.
  • Strong knowledge of design documents and drawings necessary to complete a project.
  • Experience supervising a project team in a technical work environment.
  • Knowledge of common word processing, spreadsheet, and email software.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate effectively with co-workers, vendors, and clients.
  • Valid driver’s license required; must maintain an acceptable driving record throughout employment.
Physical Requirements
  • This position requires minimal physical effort.
  • Must be able to endure prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer for a minimum of 8 hours a day.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will primarily work indoors, with occasional outdoor exposure to year-round weather conditions and noise.
  • Must be able and willing to travel overnight for trainings and/or meetings as required (10%).
  • Working extended hours, including weekends, may be required periodically.
  • May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
