Job description

Substation Lead Specialist Electrical Designer

Located in Boise, ID, with additional office options in Hailey, ID; Billings, MT; Salt Lake City, UT; and Lakewood, CO, this role supports the Power & Energy Substation Team by providing technical design and CADD support for moderate to large‑scale substation projects. The position offers an on‑site, hybrid, or remote work arrangement based on location, experience, and business needs.

This Opportunity

Provide oversight to ensure the production of high‑quality designs and specifications for planning, transportation, infrastructure, and technical services. Lead and generate CADD designs across multi‑site or multi‑phase construction projects, producing accurate deliverables such as plans, profiles, models, sections, details, specifications, and material lists that meet or exceed industry standards.

Your Impact
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data from the physical site, surveys, blueprints, and other sources to support drafting and design activities.
  • Use 3D CADD software and collaborate with engineers to resolve design details and ensure precision on projects of moderate to large scale.
  • Provide technical design assistance that adheres to geometric dimensioning, tolerances, and code requirements.
  • Act as a consultant for work progress and problem resolution, serving as the primary drafting/support resource or supervising others as needed.
  • Monitor and verify calculations, change orders, and contract specifications, escalating issues for resolution.
  • Lead tasks and provide guidance to drafting/design staff on technical assignments.
  • Ensure plans comply with city, state, and federal regulations.
  • Prepare multiple design versions for engineer review.
  • Oversee quality control and contract compliance, documenting progress and issues.
  • Collaborate with the engineer‑in‑charge and other technical professionals across project phases.
  • Apply analytical techniques and software to solve complex engineering issues and modify existing designs.
  • Coordinate schedules and review meetings with clients and contractors.
  • Provide guidance and training to entry‑level drafting staff.
  • Maintain current knowledge of drafting practices and stay updated on industry developments.
  • Exercise ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and comply with WSP’s Code of Conduct.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma.
  • Minimum of 11 years of post‑education experience in a relevant discipline with drafting and design support experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of drafting and design principles, tools, and processes.
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping.
  • Strong technical computation and analytical skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • Self‑leadership, attention to detail, results orientation, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, math, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving abilities to analyze data and arrive at effective solutions.
  • Track record of maintaining workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, and anti‑harassment policies.
  • Willingness to work flexible schedules that may extend beyond a typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required based on project needs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a closely related discipline.
  • Professional licensure/certification.

Compensation

Expected Salary (Colorado only): $102,700 – $174,500. Compensation may vary based on location, qualifications, and experience.
