WSP is seeking an Assistant Technician, Drafting Support (Substation) to join our Power & Energy team in Lakewood, CO. The role involves providing technical design and CADD support on projects for planning, transportation, infrastructure, and technical services business lines.
Responsibilities
- Support engineers, project managers, and technical staff with drafting and design activities related to utility, industrial, and commercial‑scale substation energy projects.
- Assist with research, design development, and preparation of drawings for transmission and distribution substations, power distribution systems, substation energy facilities, and protection and control systems.
- Collect, compile, and organize data from surveys, field notes, blueprints, schematics, specifications, and sketches to support drafting and design efforts.
- Use 2D and 3D CADD software to prepare drawings of basic to moderate complexity with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Work closely with engineers to resolve design questions, incorporate markups, and revise drawings through multiple review cycles.
- Prepare design deliverables such as plans, profiles, sections, details, material lists, and supporting documentation.
- Assist with verifying calculations, interpreting contract plans, and identifying basic design or construction issues for escalation.
- Ensure drawings and designs adhere to applicable city, state, and federal codes, standards, and project specifications.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional project teams to support project execution.
- Participate in training and development to build technical knowledge, drafting standards, and design best practices.
- Demonstrate responsible and ethical decision‑making and adherence to WSP’s Code of Conduct, safety policies, and quality standards.
- Perform additional duties as needed to support business and project requirements.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant post‑education experience in a discipline with drafting and design support experience.
- Familiarity with drafting and design support principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques.
- Familiarity with relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
- Excellent research and evaluation skills with an analytical mindset.
- Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a technical and non‑technical audience.
- Self‑leadership with attention to detail, ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, and comply with company policies.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project‑specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree in a closely related discipline.
- Essential professional licensure/certification.
- Exposure to substation power delivery projects.

Compensation
Expected Salary (all locations): $55,900 - $83,900
