Job summary

HDR is seeking a Substation Engineering Manager/Team Lead to join our Power Delivery group in Colorado. You will lead technical teams, partner with a PM to manage scope, schedule and client expectations, and deliver high‑quality substation projects up to 500 kV across multiple locations.

Required is a BSEE, a PE license, and 10+ years’ design experience with high‑voltage substations; strong leadership, communication, and travel willingness are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer license.
  • Ten years of experience in high‑voltage switchyard/substation design up to 500 kV.
  • Experience with industry standards (IEEE/ANSI).
  • Consulting firm experience preferred.
  • Staff supervision experience preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience using industry‑standard design software.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and conferencing platforms (Zoom, Webex, Teams).
  • Excellent organization, problem‑solving and collaboration.

HDR Engineering is currently seeking a Substation Engineering Manager/Team Lead (EM/TL) to join our growing and nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain a partnership with a Project Manager, who is responsible for scope, schedule, budget, and client management; the EM/TL is responsible for leading the technical team and technical execution of project deliverables.
  • Develop and implement a project execution plan for the technical aspects of projects.
  • Assign project tasks and provide technical guidance to team members.
  • Support the technical aspects of scope, schedule, and budget, including proposal development, work breakdown structure development, progress assessment, risk assessment/mitigation, change management, and schedule management.
  • Work independently and direct, mentor, train, and/or supervise one or more Project Engineers, EITs, or CADD/Designers.
  • Coordinate and/or perform quality checks and reviews for all project deliverables per HDR Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements, processes, and procedures to deliver a world‑class quality product to the client. Perform quality checks and/or reviews of projects from other teams on an as‑needed basis.
  • Lead multiple projects concurrently, utilizing teams in different locations.
  • Work with senior engineers and technical leaders to identify and develop specific technical expertise, and attend training and seminars focused on further development and understanding of complex concepts related to the discipline.
  • May also assist with developing technical papers and/or presentations that showcase HDR’s technical capabilities at industry conferences or other events.
  • Participate in project reviews as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Minimum eight years of technical design experience with high‑voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects up to 500 kV; conceptual knowledge of physical, electrical, civil, and structural design components; knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, and other applicable design and equipment standards.
  • Previous consulting firm experience preferred.
  • Track record of working cooperatively with diverse teams, regional and departmental technical managers, and project staff.
  • Previous staff supervision experience preferred.
  • Self‑starter with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience using industry‑standard design software.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and conferencing platforms (Zoom, Webex, Teams, etc.).
  • Strong conceptual, organizational, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Some travel may be required.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of ten years of experience.
  • Professional registration, license or certification may be required based on role.
  • Strong communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments.
  • Good leadership and organizational skills.
