Job summary

Kiewit Power Engineering in Raleigh, NC is seeking electrical engineering interns focused on power delivery. You will assist with substation design and EPC tasks on projects from 12kV to 500kV, applying engineering principles under supervision.

As part of a team of design professionals, you’ll contribute to detailed design activities, relay coordination, load flow, and grid studies while supporting project schedules and standards nationwide.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with a power background preferred.
  • AC/DC fundamentals, three phase power systems, per-unit mathematics and symmetrical components are preferred.
  • Familiarity with substation components and their functions, engineering drawings, and NEC/NESC/NEMA/IEEE/ANSI standards is expected.
  • Proficiency with standard office software (Word, Excel, Outlook) and teamwork.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Create design documents and drawings for projects, including wiring diagrams and bills of materials.
  • Assist with relay burden, lighting, load flow, and short circuit calculations under supervision.
  • Use engineering software for ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, and load flow studies with supervision.
  • Review project schedules and help keep projects on track.
  • Support project activities and coordination with engineers, clients, and vendors.
  • Ensure quality and accuracy of work and raise issues to the project engineer.

Position Overview

We are looking to hire students pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering with a Power Delivery focus! These interns will assist with performing engineering and design duties, which require the application of engineering principles and knowledge of substation design.

As part of this team of highly specialized design professionals, you will support a variety of substation, transmission and distribution projects ranging from 12kV to 500kV in both engineering detailed design and Engineer, Procure, Construct (EPC) projects for clients throughout the country.

Location

This position is based out of our Raleigh, NC office.

Responsibilities
  • Work with project team to create all design documents and drawings for a project, including creating wiring diagrams from schematics, generating bills of materials, and applying field mark-ups of project as-built drawings with minimal supervision
  • Assist with engineering support tasks such as relay burden, lighting, load flow, and short circuit calculations with minimal supervision
  • Assist with the usage of engineering application software to complete engineering tasks such as ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, and load flow and short circuit studies with minimal supervision
  • Review project schedules and work with project engineer to ensure projects remain on schedule
  • Properly use the document management system
  • Apply corporate standard engineering practices
  • Assist with project activities
  • Assist with the with the communication and coordination of project activities with project engineer, customer representatives, and others as needed
  • Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of his/her work
  • Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party
Qualifications
  • Pursuing a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field from an accredited university, with a power background preferred
  • 3.0 cumulative GPA preferred
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of:
  • AC/DC fundamentals
  • three phase power systems
  • per-unit mathematics and symmetrical components
  • substation components and their functions
  • design documents and drawings necessary to complete a project
  • engineering standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI
  • common Word processing, Spreadsheet, and E-mail software
