Actalent is seeking a Substation Engineer to lead engineering designs for utility substations, ensuring compliance with NEC/NESC/NEMA/IEEE and industry standards. You will mentor engineers, support proposals, and coordinate cross-discipline design activities.

You will deliver detailed substation layouts, grounding, and equipment specs while interacting with clients and project teams to drive successful outcomes.

Job description

Job Title: Substation Engineer

The Substation Engineer will utilize their comprehensive knowledge of NEC, NESC, NEMA, ANSI, IEEE, and industry standard work practices to complete engineering designs for utility substation projects. This role requires acting as a project lead or independent reviewer, providing technical support to clients, and supporting regional business development initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Act as project lead or independent reviewer for assigned projects.
• Provide technical support for clients and support regional business development initiatives.
• Lead and mentor teams of engineers and designers, ensuring their success on projects.
• Support creation of proposals and scope development.
• Work collaboratively in a project team environment with other engineers and designers.
• Participate in project conceptualization, work planning, and project execution.
• Lead the execution of engineering activities.
• Design physical substations, including equipment layouts, grounding, and control building arrangements.
• Perform calculations for studies and reports, and prepare equipment and installation specifications.
• Coordinate design activities with other disciplines and groups.
• Develop and improve processes, tools, and technology within the organization.
• Provide leadership, training, and mentoring to other engineers and team members.
• Regularly meet and correspond with clients or external partners.
• Perform quality reviews for other engineers and designers.
• Conduct field visits for site walkdowns and construction support.
• Support business development and marketing initiatives.
• Involvement in relay setting development, 3D modeling/design, or technical committee participation.
• Work with the Project Management team to develop project plans and provide updates.

Essential Skills

• 4+ years of experience as a Physical Substation Engineer.
• Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical) or related field.
• Proficiency with NESC, IEEE, and other relevant codes and standards.
• Experience in creating and reviewing substation design drawings.
• Ability to organize complex assignments and manage competing priorities effectively.
• Exceptional analytical and decision-making skills.
• Ability to lead staff, delegate assignments, and drive positive results.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience on the consulting side is highly preferred.
• Strong preference for registration in relevant fields.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate in cross-functional teams.
• Successful record of client interactions.

This position offers a fully remote work environment, providing the opportunity to join a growing Substation team. Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Pittsburgh, PA.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $125000.00 - $170000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
