Job description

Summary

Substation Engineering III/Senior – provides technical engineering, design, economic and analytical support for the development of Transmission and Distribution Substations. This role requires engineering tasks in substation design, including civil, electrical, physical equipment layout, protection and control. The person will make technical decisions, provide guidance and leadership, and may be subject to shift work.

Responsibilities

Day‑to‑day responsibilities include:

  • Preparing engineering plans, designs, analysis, specifications, cost estimates, evaluations, studies, technical reviews, investigations and verifications.
  • Complying with design, regulatory, operating and maintenance requirements.
  • Ensuring engineering analyses, design, project control, schedule commitments or oversight work are technically sound, cost‑effective, and compliant with standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Checking and reviewing analysis, evaluations and investigations of others.
  • Interface with customers and other departments to confirm project objectives, scope, budget and schedule.
  • Contacting customers and management to obtain or present technical data.
  • Presenting results of designs, studies and projects to colleagues, management and customers.
  • Enhancing department performance and productivity through analysis, recommendations for improvements and guidance to personnel.
  • Providing oversight of engineering technical programs by managing program requirements, coordinating with partners and corrective actions.
  • Managing small‑to‑medium scale projects, including planning, design, scheduling and coordination of all facets.
  • Identifying potential schedule or quality problems and initiating corrective action.
  • Providing technical guidance and leadership to less experienced engineers.
  • Participating in long‑range strategy development for significant site problems.
  • Providing input to projects, recommending modifications to increase operating efficiency and reviewing documentation to ensure compliance with specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Remaining cognizant of current technology and engineering developments.
Qualifications

Engineer III: Four‑year Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline or related applied science discipline from an ABET accredited institution, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution or an ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) plus five (5) years of working experience in engineering‑related positions.

Engineer Senior: Same degree requirements plus eight (8) years of working experience in engineering‑related positions.

Approved engineer degrees include Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical and Structural. A four‑year Bachelor of Engineering Technology degree is not automatically considered equivalent; a review of the curriculum must be conducted by Engineering department management.
