Job summary

HDR is seeking a Substation EIT/Designer in Tampa, FL, to join our Power Delivery team. You will contribute to substation design projects ranging from equipment replacements to greenfield work, under supervision by senior engineers.

Ideal candidates hold an Engineering degree and an EIT or are pursuing it, with strong CAD and MS Office skills. Local candidates are preferred; occasional travel may be required.

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering is required.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools.

Responsibilities

• Prepare engineering drawings, calculations, analyses, reports and designs for electrical substations.
• Gain experience in Protection and Control (Indoor) and Physical (Outdoor) HV substation design.
• Work under the direction of the Project Manager and Project Engineer.
• Prepare calculations, design sketches and redline drawings.
• Develop drawings with CAD in line with national standards and project specs.
• Create one‑line diagrams, protection/control schematics, wiring diagrams, SCADA and grounding layouts.
• Occasional short‑term travel (1–5 days).

HDR Engineering is currently seeking a Substation EIT/Designer to join our growing and nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals. The successful candidate will be an integral part of a team that executes technical design on substation engineering projects ranging in scale from simple device replacements to large greenfield design projects. This is an excellent growth opportunity for a self‑directed individual who is eager to learn and take on new challenges.

The primary duties of a Substation EIT/Designer include:

• Preparation of engineering drawings, calculations, analyses, reports and designs for electrical substations (Low, Medium and High Voltage) and substation systems under the direction and supervision of more senior engineers and designers.
• The successful/ideal candidate will be seeking knowledge and experience in both the Protection and Control (Indoor) and Physical (Outdoor) aspects of High Voltage (HV) Substation design.
• Work under the direction of the Project Manager(s) and Project Engineer(s).
• Prepare calculations, design sketches and redline drawings.
• Work with Designers and CAD Technicians to develop drawings in accordance with national design standards, safety codes and project specifications and requirements.
• Typical designs include one‑line diagrams, protection and control schematic development, wiring diagrams, SCADA, communications, substation physical layouts, material lists, conduit and cable sizing/routing, AC and DC systems calculations and sizing, and substation grounding.
• Occasional short‑term travel (typically 1‑5 days) may be necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

• Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate
• Candidates without their EIT will be placed into a Design Coordinator job code and will be expected to obtain their EIT for career progression
• Local candidates preferred
