Job summary

HDR is seeking a Substation EIT/Designer to join our Power Delivery team in Billings, MT. You will participate in engineering design on substations from device replacements to greenfield projects.

Responsibilities include preparing drawings, calculations, analyses, and reports for electrical substations under supervision, collaborating with PMs and CAD staff, and ensuring designs meet standards and codes. Occasional travel may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field required.
  • EIT certification preferred for career progression.
  • Experience with substation design concepts is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare drawings, calculations, analyses, reports, and designs for electrical substations.
  • Collaborate with Project Manager(s) and Engineer(s) to develop designs per standards.
  • Develop one-line diagrams, protection & control schematics, wiring diagrams, SCADA, and grounding.
  • Occasional short-term travel for project assignments.

Primary Responsibilities

Substation EIT/ Substation Designer to join our Power Delivery team. The role involves participating in engineering design on substation projects ranging from device replacements to large greenfield designs. The primary duties include preparation of engineering drawings, calculations, analyses, reports, and designs for electrical substations (Low, Medium and High Voltage) and substation systems under supervision. The ideal candidate will gain experience in both the Protection and Control (Indoor) and Physical (Outdoor) aspects of HV Substation design.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Work under the direction of the Project Manager(s) and Project Engineer(s).
  • Prepare calculations, design sketches and redline drawings.
  • Collaborate with Designers and CAD Technicians to develop drawings in accordance with national design standards, safety codes and project specifications.
  • Typical designs include one-line diagrams, protection and control schematic development, wiring diagrams, SCADA, communications, substation physical layouts, material lists, conduit and cable sizing/routing, AC/DC systems calculations and sizing, and substation grounding.
  • Occasional short-term travel (typically 1–5 days); longer assignments may be required infrequently.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Candidates without their EIT will be titled Substation Designer and are expected to obtain their EIT for career progression.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field of study.
