Job summary

Auriga Corporation in Milpitas, California, seeks an experienced Substation Design Engineer to lead high-voltage substation design activities from 69 kV to 500 kV, including layouts, protection, grounding, and conduit design. You will develop and review drawings, coordinate with clients and project teams, ensure compliance with IEEE, NESC, NEC, and ANSI standards, and contribute to reports, estimates, and QA/QC.

A California P.E.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of substation design experience.
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering required.
• California P.E. license is required.

Responsibilities

• Perform and coordinate high-voltage substation design activities (69–500 kV).
• Develop and review engineering drawings and BOMs.
• Coordinate with clients, PMs, and other disciplines to deliver on schedule.
• Participate in QA/QC of drawings and documents.
• Ensure designs meet applicable codes and standards (IEEE, NESC, NEC, ANSI).
• Prepare reports, cost estimates, and studies.
• Provide guidance to junior staff and support BD efforts.

Substation Design Engineer

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform and coordinate high-voltage substation design activities, including physical layout, protection and control systems, grounding, and conduit design.


• Develop and review engineering drawings such as single-line diagrams, wiring schematics, equipment layouts, and bill of materials.


• Coordinate with clients, project managers, and other engineering disciplines to support the timely and accurate delivery of project deliverables.


• Participate in technical reviews and QA/QC of engineering drawings and documents.


• Develop designs in accordance with applicable codes and standards, including IEEE, NESC, NEC, and utility/client specifications.


• Prepare engineering reports, cost estimates, and technical studies.


• Perform design and engineering activities for high-voltage substation projects ranging from 69 kV to 500 kV, coordinating with multidisciplinary project teams and senior engineering staff.


• Provide technical guidance and support to junior engineers and designers.


• Assist with business development and proposal efforts by providing technical input and supporting the development of design-hour estimates.

Qualifications & Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.


• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in substation design engineering.


• Current California Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is required.


• Strong working knowledge of substation equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, control panels, and related equipment.


• Proficiency with industry-standard design software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, ETAP, or similar.


• Strong working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including NESC, NEC, IEEE, and ANSI.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

• Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.


• Experience working with California electric utilities, including PG&E, SCE, SDG&E, or municipal utilities.


• Experience with substation automation and SCADA integration.


• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is preferred; California Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is a plus.
