Position Primary Purpose:
The Substance Use Disorder Counselor is responsible for conducting admission interviews, diagnosing, and developing individualized treatment plans under American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) standards. This role includes performing case management, facilitating group and individual counseling sessions, and monitoring client progress to adjust therapeutic approaches accordingly. The counselor ensures timely completion of all required documentation and compliance with state reporting mandates.
Perform admission interviews in accordance with ASAM standards to determine diagnoses and develop individualized treatment plans.
Conduct case management, including providing referrals and adhering to state-mandated reporting requirements.
Serve as the primary counselor for multiple clients, monitoring individual progress and adjusting therapeutic approaches and evidence-based interventions based on client responses to treatment.
Facilitate counseling groups for a diverse client population in need of support.
Complete all required documentation, including group session notes, individual session notes, assessments, and treatment plans, within the specified timeframes (24-72 hours).
All other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge of ASAM criteria, assessments, treatment planning, and service terminology.
Ability to effectively build therapeutic relationships with clients.
Respond calmly and professionally in high-stress situations and constructively to clients in crisis.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Proficient in using Electronic Health Records (EHR).
Work effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds and vulnerable populations.
Uphold confidentiality and ethical standards.
High School Diploma or equivalent is required; Associate degree or higher, preferred.
A minimum of two (2) years of experience in substance use disorder treatment, CADC-R, but must have current, valid CADC-I at time of interview.
A minimum of two (2) years of continuous abstinence from all psychoactive substances for candidates with a history of substance use.
Demonstrated competence in substance use disorder treatment, including evaluation skills and proficiency in individual, family, and group counseling.
Experience working with clients who are unhoused, have substance use disorders and/or mental health concerns, and come from diverse backgrounds.
Bilingual proficiency.
Demonstrated commitment to promoting inclusivity and safety for marginalized populations.
Experience in reporting and ensuring compliance with healthcare programs.
Strong service orientation with a commitment to developing and maintaining positive and healthy working relationships.
This position is a full-time, non-union, non-exempt position, with pay dependent on experience (DOE), and p aid out bi-weekly.
This position requires successful passage of a State mandated background check.
