Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin is seeking a Substance Use Disorder Advanced Practice Provider (SUD APP) at 0.5 FTE (20 hours per week) to join a multidisciplinary team delivering outpatient addiction care.

The SUD APP will evaluate and treat patients, prescribe medications, coordinate with behavioral health and primary care, and participate in on-call hours as needed, under direction of the Associate Medical Director.

Qualifications

• Advanced Practice Nurses must hold a WI RN license and APNP certification.
• PA-Cs must hold WI PA-C license and NPI as needed.
• Current CPR/AED certification required; within four months of employment.
• Minimum of three years in substance use disorders evaluation and treatment preferred.
• Knowledge of addiction medicine and evidence-based practices.
• Ability to collaborate with behavioral health and primary care teams.
• Proficiency with electronic health records and EPIC.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.

Responsibilities

.5 FTE / 20 Hours per Week

The Substance Use Disorder Advanced Practice Provider (SUD APP) works collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team of addiction medicine physicians, certified substance abuse counselors, registered nurses and other staff to coordinate, support and deliver evidence-based, high-quality substance use disorder treatment to patients. The SUD APP functions as an independent healthcare provider with an advanced degree of knowledge, skill and expertise in history taking, physical examination, evaluation of treatment of substance use disorders and related concerns. The SUD APP provides outpatient substance use disorder evaluation, treatment, education and consultation services to patients seen in the substance use disorders program. The incumbent prescribes and manages medications appropriate for substance use disorders and other conditions as appropriate. The SUD APP works in a collaborative relationship with other GHC-SCW health care behavioral health and primary care providers. The SUD APP receives clinical direction from, and collaborates with, the Associate Medical Director-Substance Use Disorders, and receives administrative supervision and direction from the Director of Behavioral Health.

The SUD APP shall see patients in behavioral health, primary care or urgent care dependent on APP credentials, staffing and patient care needs.

Minimum Qualifications

• 1. Advanced Practice Nurse Prescribers must hold a valid State of Wisconsin license to practice as a Registered Nurse and a valid State of Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber (APNP) certification.
  • a. Certification by the State of Wisconsin Medicaid/Health Forward program as an APNP and possession of a National Provider Identifier (NPI Number) for health care providers required.
  • b. Current, national certification as a Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist in area complementary to substance use disorders, such as family practice, psychiatric or mental health nursing is required. Certifying agency must be approved by the State of Wisconsin.
  • c. Current memberships in professional nursing associations preferred.
  • d. Master's or doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in Nursing with specialty preparation as a Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Nurse Specialist preferred.
• 2. Physician Assistants must hold a valid State of Wisconsin license to practice as a Physician Assistant.
  • a. Certification by the State of Wisconsin Medicaid/Health Forward program as a PA-C and possession of a National Provider Identifier (NPI Number) for health care providers required.
  • b. Current, national certification as a PA-C.
  • c. Completion of bachelor's, master's, or doctoral level degree from an accredited college or university.
• 3. Possession of or eligibility for a valid Healthcare Provider CPR/AED certificate is required. Employee must obtain certification within four (4) months of employment.
• 4. A minimum of three (3) years of experience in substance use disorders evaluation and treatment is preferred. Previous experience in managing substance induced intoxication or withdrawal is preferred.
• 5. Medical knowledge as a basis for quality decision making. Ability to adapt standard practices for care of specific cases. Ability to recognize and identify medical symptoms and problems. Current knowledge of the evidence-based practice of addiction medicine.
• 6. Strong knowledge of pharmacologic agents used in the treatment of and related to substance use disorders and related conditions. Ability to prescribe medications, evaluate outcomes and modify medications/dosages, as appropriate.
• 7. Ability to provide preventive services, care of episodic illness, and collaborative participation in the management of stable chronic illness.
• 8. Ability to adapt standard practices for care of specific cases and to coordinate patient care and follow-up.
• 9. Knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques to perform a high level of service.
• 10. Ability to provide culturally competent services and to work effectively with persons of diverse cultural backgrounds.
• 11. Knowledge of and ability to use personal computers. Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs. Ability to learn and use electronic medical record systems such as EPIC.
• 12. Ability to maintain patient confidentiality. Knowledge of medical records and appropriate documentation requirements. Knowledge of HIPAA requirements, particularly as it relates to care of substance use disorders.
• 13. Ability to work with clinic and administrative staff. Ability to be a team player in a team oriented environment required. Ability to interact with staff at all levels.
• 14. Ability to work some evening hours and after hours on-call.
• 15. Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to speak and listen in person and on the phone.
• 16. Professional manner necessary to deal courteously and effectively with patients and the public.
• 17. Ability to sit and stand intermittently required and ability to remain seated and attentive to patient verbalizations for extended periods of time.
