Job description

Summary:

Equiliem is seeking a Substitute School Nurse to provide assessment, screening, planning, intervention, evaluation, counseling, management, and/or referrals concerning students' health and medical care needs. The goal is to minimize absences due to illness, maximize educational opportunities, and promote a healthy school climate.

Essential Functions:
  1. Collaborate with healthcare providers, students' parents, school district staff, and community agencies to ensure access and continuity of care.
  2. Assist in establishing and maintaining a comprehensive school health program.
  3. Collect information on students' health development for compliance with immunization regulations and policies.
  4. Conduct immunization programs, physical exams, and sight and hearing tests.
  5. Perform nursing assessments for ill or injured students, providing first aid, care, and referrals.
  6. Evaluate and modify nursing care plans as needed.
  7. Implement policies regarding exclusion and readmission related to infectious diseases.
  8. Maintain accurate records in accordance with laws and policies.
  9. Develop individual health care plans (ICHP) and incorporate them into students' IEPs.
  10. Intervene based on nursing care plans to promote health and prevent illness.
  11. Participate in school teams such as Crisis Teams, PPT, Section 504.
  12. Provide guidance, counseling, and health education.
  13. Communicate with parents, staff, physicians, and clinics regarding students' health needs.
  14. Train staff on emergency procedures and care for students with disabilities.
  15. Contribute to nursing practice and research.
  16. Assess the health of school district employees as requested.
  17. Provide health education to students as needed.
  18. Report injuries or illnesses to appropriate parties.
  19. Consult with parents and staff regarding health assessments.
Additional Duties:

Perform other tasks as assigned.

Equipment:
  • Use medical equipment such as blood glucose monitors, stethoscopes, thermometers, sphygmomanometers.
  • Use personal computers.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, symptoms, treatments, and nutrition.
  • Ability to diagnose and care for ill or injured students.
  • Effective communication of medical information.
  • Mathematical skills for record-keeping.
  • Proficiency with computers and software.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and students with special needs.
  • Ability to follow instructions and coordinate with staff and professionals.
  • Ability to document and describe services provided.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships.

  • Implement policies on blood-borne pathogens and health care.

Qualifications Profile:
  • Combination of education, licenses, certifications, and experience.
License or Certificate:
  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensed in New Jersey or School Nurse certification.
