Job summary

SMSI is seeking a part-time Subject Matter Expert (SME) with extensive startup experience within DOE to support our client, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The SME is responsible for providing startup and assessment support.

This position requires working onsite at LANL and active Q clearance. Responsibilities include leading or supporting Independent Verification Reviews (IVR), Management Self Assessments (MSA), and Readiness Assessments (RA) in plutonium, tritium, and uranium processing

Qualifications

• 20+ years of DOE engineering experience.
• 10+ years startup experience within DOE environments.
• Active DOE Q clearance and US citizenship.

Responsibilities

• Provide startup and assessment support across LANL.
• Lead or support IVR, MSA, and RA in plutonium, tritium, and uranium facilities.
• Perform readiness assessments related to DOEs order and safety requirements.
• Maintain program documentation and coordinate with management.

Job Summary

SMSI is seeking a part-time Subject Matter Expert (SME) with extensive startup experience within DOE to support our client, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The SME is responsible for providing startup and assessment support. This position requires working onsite at LANL and active Q clearance.

Responsibilities

• Provide startup and assessment support across the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
• Lead and or support Independent Verification Reviews (IVR), Management Self Assessments (MSA), and Readiness Assessments (RA) in plutonium, tritium, and uranium processing facilities.
• Perform RAs associated with conduct of operations implementation, Documented Safety Analysis (DSA)/Technical Safety Requirements (TSR) implementation, design and construction of facility seismic upgrades, and criticality safety program implementation.
• When needed provide operations support in the areas of conduct of operations implementation and supported the evaluation of the Laboratory's Conduct of Operations Manual for consistency and compliance with the Department of Energy's (DOE) Order, DOE-O-422.1, Conduct of Operations.
• Provide the readiness verification of the facility's compliance with the safety envelope (DSAs and TSRs).
• Maintain effective communication and coordination among technical personnel and program management.
• Emphasize and promote safety, security, environmental stewardship, and compliance while accomplishing program objectives.
• Maintain accurate program documentation and records in accordance with applicable requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned in support of organizational and mission requirements.

Required Skills/ Abilities

• 20+ years of experience in engineering for the DOE is required.
• 10 years of startup experience within DOE environments.
• Experience writing assessments for startup projects.
• Experience leading and/ or supporting Independent Verification Reviews (IVR), Management Self Assessments (MSA), and Readiness Assessments (RA) in plutonium, tritium, and uranium processing facilities is required.
• Previous experience supporting LANL in a lead engineering role is required.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to brief management.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting established schedules and deadlines.
• Ability to work effectively in a highly regulated, safety-conscious, and security-focused environment.
• Ability to work onsite part-time at LANL is required.
• An active DOE Q clearance is required.
• US citizenship is required.
• An active Real-ID driver’s license is required.

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a minimum of 20 years of relevant technical experience within DOE (SRNL, LANL, etc).
