Job Description

Summary: The Substitute, Head Start Aide will assist the classroom teacher in the overall operation and activities of Head Start in accordance with the Head Start Performance Standards.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in implementing the lesson plan.
  • Report to the assigned class in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Assist with maintaining order in the classroom.
  • Maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning.
  • Protect students while using materials, equipment, and facilities with appropriate precautions.
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and school board policies.
  • Establish and maintain positive, professional communication among students, staff, and parents as applicable.
  • Perform light custodial duties related to safety and hygiene in the classroom and other environments accessed by students.
  • Monitor student behavior using positive behavior supports and interventions in the classroom, lunchroom, on school grounds, and at off‑campus activities.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.
  • Responsibilities and tasks may change as determined by the needs of the district.

Experience, Certificates, and Skills

Experience: One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in early childhood and bilingual preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Completion of Head Start Orientation.

Language Skills: Reads and comprehends simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Writes simple correspondence. Effectively presents information in one-on-one and small group situations.

Mathematical Skills: Adds and subtracts two-digit numbers, multiplies and divides with 10s and 100s, uses American money and weight, volume, and distance units.

Reasoning Ability: Applies understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.

Computer Skills: Microsoft Office.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Physical Activities: Standing, walking, sitting, handling, keyboarding, talking, hearing.
  • Lifting Demands: Up to 55 pounds.
  • Reaching Activities: Both dominant and non-dominant hand; overhead.
  • Environmental Conditions: Noise Intensity: 3, moderate.
