Job summary

Job description

Assists the Department of Natural Sciences in a variety of tasks.

Duties
  • Biology Work-study: The primary responsibilities of this position include assisting with the preparation of weekly labs (e.g., preparing solutions, setting up lab materials), assisting students as they work through labs, and cleaning up the labs (including all glassware), and/or work in the greenhouse. May also be responsible for grading lab assignments and/or required to offer additional tutoring hours for students to review lab materials. For courses that include field trips, a defensive driving certification is a plus.
  • Chemistry Work-study: Assist with laboratory set up including pre-testing experiments, solution preparation, gathering materials and returning items to inventory. Keeps waste log sheets and chemical/equipment inventories updated. Cleans glassware. Makes sure all safety procedures are met including regular cleaning and inspection of safety equipment. May grade lab reports and lab assignments and/or offer tutoring hours for students to review materials. Other special projects as needed.
  • Earth Science Work-study: Assist with lab set up. Prepares materials needed for Earth Science labs. Cleans glassware and makes sure all safety procedures are met. Grades Earth Science and Geographic Information Systems Science course materials including labs and assignments. May assist with field trips. A background in earth science, geographic information systems science, biology and/or chemistry required.
  • Provides a broad range of administrative functions. Maintains comprehensive communication among all contacts (internal and external). Models professional standards and ethics in accordance with WNMU philosophy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Background

Current WNMU student. Background in biology and/or chemistry requires for Biology/Chemistry Works-study. Background in geology, geographic information systems science, biology and/or chemistry for Earth Science Work-study.

Job Knowledge

Excellent customer service and communication skills. Skill in general office duties and office equipment to include telephones, copier, Fax, and computer/computer programs. Must be knowledgeable of University policies and procedures. Must be able to handle multiple deadlines and maintain accuracy. Must be sensitive to cultural differences within the University and community. Fluent in Microsoft Office Applications.

Working Conditions/ Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations)

Normal office environment. May be required to lift normal office equipment and materials. Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information. Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication. Hearing ability for verbal communication/ conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions. Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing, and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.
