Department Overview:

This position in the UW–Madison Office of Human Resources (OHR) develops and maintains websites and web applications used by UW employees and campus HR professionals. We are looking for an undergraduate student with a passion for programming and a desire to learn.

Anticipated Start Date:

Fall 2026

Schedule:

8-12 hours per week, while classes are in session. Additional hours may be available during breaks.

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Minimum:
  • Proficiency with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Some familiarity with Git or other version control systems
  • Ability to work independently for extended periods of time
Preferred:
  • Working knowledge of modern web standards, including accessibility and responsive design
  • Modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g. Vue, React, Angular)
  • PHP / MySQL
  • WordPress or other content management systems
  • JSON / Consuming data from an API
  • Writing and reading technical documentation
Position Summary/Job Duties:
1. Programming and Web Development (70%)
  • Assist with design, development, maintenance, and enhancement of OHR websites and applications.
  • Utilize development best practices to release code that meets the university’s requirements for accessibility.
  • Maintain consistency with existing codebases, visual, and editorial guidelines.
  • Assist with routine web content updates in an accurate and timely manner.
2. Workflow Design and Documentation (20%)
  • Create and maintain documentation to support internal development workflows and processes, including version control, developer collaboration, permissions, standards, style guides, etc.
  • Learn development processes from coworkers and teach those processes to future employees.
3. Other duties as assigned (10%)
  • Influence the workplace in a positive manner and participate in effective team building.
  • Promote respect and the practice of civility in the workplace.
  • Provide input to adjust assignments and priorities where necessary to ensure standards and objectives are met.
