Job summary

Cheshire Public Schools is seeking a Student Transportation Driver to safely transport students K-12 on established routes, Monday–Friday 6:30 AM–3:00 PM, 40 hours per week. This role requires vigilance to traffic and weather, proper vehicle inspections, and strict adherence to safety rules while maintaining a positive, orderly bus environment.

Responsibilities include following route sheets, communicating with parents and school staff, and assisting students with safety restraints when needed;

Qualifications

• CDL B with P and S endorsement or Class D with V endorsement.
• Pass background check, DOT physical and drug test.
• Maintain commercial driver's medical certificate and pass random tests.
• 120 working day probationary period.
• Experience transporting K-12 students preferred.

Responsibilities

• Transport students to and from school in a safe and efficient manner per routes and laws.
• Read and follow bus route sheets and instructions.
• Communicate effectively with passengers, parents, and school officials.
• Use two-way radio to communicate with the Transportation Office.
• Complete pre/post trip inspections and report deficiencies.
• Enforce bus safety rules and manage student behavior.
• Ensure students are secured in seatbelts or car seats when equipped.
• Assist students with restraints if necessary.
• Assist physically challenged students when needed.
• Inspect vehicles after routes for sleeping students and items left behind.
• Substitute as Transportation Aide if necessary.

Student Transportation Driver

Monday - Friday 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM

40 Hours/Week

The Student Transportation Driver is responsible for safely transporting students Kindergarten through 12th grade to and from school following established routes. They may also transport students and faculty to field trips, sporting events, job shares or other special events. Drivers must comply with all bus operating laws and be attentive to traffic and weather conditions while staying on schedule. They must ensure that their vehicles are safely operating properly each day. Drivers are also responsible for maintaining a safe environment within the bus by enforcing rules of conduct and responding to emergencies.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

• Transport students to and from school in a safe and efficient manner in compliance with established bus routes and all bus operating laws.
• Read and understand bus route sheet and follow instructions.
• Communicate effectively with passengers, parents and school officials.
• Use the two-way radio to communicate with the Transportation Office.
• Complete pre and post trip inspections, report any mechanical deficiencies and properly maintain the DVIR.
• Enforce bus safety rules and maintain control of the students in the vehicle. Any incident that is difficult to control must be reported to the Transportation Office.
• Ensure that all students are secure in seatbelts or car seats while they are in the vehicle whenever the vehicle is so equipped.
• Driver may have to assist students in and out of seatbelts, harnesses, car seats or any other child restraint device, if necessary.
• Assist physically challenged students/ wheel chair students, if necessary.
• Inspect vehicles after each route for "sleeping" students and items left by students.
• Substitute as a Transportation Aide for a student, if necessary.

SCHOOL YEAR:

180 school days plus reduced summer hours are available.

REPORTS TO:

Transportation Manager

QUALIFICATIONS:

STV/Bus driver with CDL B with P and S endorsement or Class D with V endorsement. Candidate must pass background check and DOT physical and drug test. Must maintain a commercial drivers medical certificate and pass continuous random drug tests. There is a 120 working day probationary period. Experience transporting K-12 students preferred.

SALARY:

Starting wage for STV/Bus Driver with CDL with P and S endorsement - $21.75/hour. Student Van Driver with Class D with V endorsement - $18.10/hour.
