Responsibilities

  • Serve as resource in behavior management using Cornell TCI techniques for staff.
  • Maintain up-to-date time-out logs, restraint records and incident reports per NYSED and HGS policy.
  • Provide ongoing support and training on Cornell TCI and behavior management techniques.
  • Utilize time-out procedures, ensuring Life Space Interview before class return.
  • Attend weekly staff and program planning meetings; participate in BIP meetings.
  • Assist teachers with behavior management in crisis situations per policy and Cornell TCI.
  • Cooperate with residential programs per Daily Student Record (DSR).
  • Enforce school rules and supervise In-School Suspension.
  • Participate in destruction process and forward docs to Q.I Dept.
  • Pursue Cornell TCI trainer certification and train staff as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Basic Function/Overall Responsibilities: To provide support and assistance to students during crisis situations. In addition to crisis assistance, the Student Support Specialist will help with proactive techniques to encourage a positive environment in the school program.

Principal Assigned Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a resource in the area of behavior management utilizing Cornell trained TCI techniques to school staff within the context of the educational program.
  • Maintain up-to- date and comprehensive time out logs, restraint records and incident and accident reports on all students placed in time out as required by NYSED and HGS policy and procedure.
  • Provide on-going support, assistance and training for educational staff regarding H.G.S approved Cornell TCI techniques and overall behavior management techniques.
  • Utilize time out procedures to meet the individual needs of each student, assuring that a Life Space Interview is held prior to a student returning to class.
  • Attend and actively participate in weekly staff meetings, educational planning meetings, Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIP) meetings and any others deemed appropriate.
  • Actively participate in weekly meetings with other Student Support Specialist to assess trends and long range developments of behavior modification efforts within the school and conduct other business as determined by school administration.
  • Assist teachers in behavior management techniques and crisis situations in a consistent manner according to The House of the Good Shepherd’s Policy and Procedures as well as Cornell TCI techniques.
  • Provide cooperation and assistance to residential programs when deemed appropriate in accordance with the Daily Student Record (DSR)
  • Assist in the enforcement of school rules.
  • Assist in the supervision of students placed on In-School Suspension.
  • Participate and provide feedback during the destruction process and ensure all documentation is forwarded Q.I Department and Residential programs as necessary.
  • Obtain and maintain Cornell TCI trainer Certification
  • Act as an HGS TCI trainer for all HGS staff for any necessary trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
QualificationsEducation & Experience Requirements:
  • 1. High School Diploma required and an Associate’s Degree preferred
  • 2. One-year experience in behavior management or a related position
  • 3. First Aid and CPR
  • 4. One week of TCI Training at Cornell University will be required along with required update trainings as required by Cornell to maintain Trainer Certification.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:

  • 6. Follows mandated reporting requirements regarding child abuse and neglect.
  • 7. Practices infection control, including appropriate hand washing procedures.
  • 8. Ability to separate personal feelings from crisis situation.
  • 9. Knowledge of when physical intervention is needed.
  • 10. The knowledge that there is good in every child.
  • 11. Good written communication skills, i.e. restraint reports, med. Updates, log entries, monthly reports, spill kit logs.
  • 12. Good working relationship with Teachers, Administrators and cottage Life Space staff.
  • 13. Valid New York State driver’s license.
