Job summary

Michigan State University College of Nursing is seeking a Specialist-Advisor for the Office of Student Affairs. The role plans, coordinates, and implements initiatives to advance undergraduate recruitment, admissions, enrollment, and academic advising, with a focus on student success and data-informed decisions.

The successful candidate will have a strong academic background, experience in advising and recruitment, and the ability to work collaboratively across a large organization.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education or related field.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in academic advising and/or student recruitment within a higher education setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including experience in public speaking.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality customer service and exercise sound judgment with minimal supervision.
  • Proven ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data to support student success and inform advising practices.
  • Demonstrated innovative problem-solving skills and the ability to implement creative, practical solutions to complex challenges.
  • Evidence of the ability to work collaboratively and constructively across multiple levels of a complex organization, building consensus and fostering positive working relationships with diverse populations.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Provide proactive, student-centered academic advising to prospective and current undergraduate students regarding university, college, and program requirements.
  • Monitor and track students’ academic progress toward degree completion, identifying and addressing opportunity barriers to success.
  • Conduct graduation checks to ensure timely progress and degree certification.
  • Coordinate, plan, and participate in events hosted by the Office of Student Affairs including new student, graduation, and recruitment events.
  • Serve on university-wide and college-level committees to represent the Office of Student Affairs and support institutional initiatives.
  • Teach at least one section annually of the UGS 110 seminar for Pre-nursing students.
