This position is with the Department of English at Michigan State University. The position is a student social media and communications assistant, who will work closely with faculty and staff in the English department on scheduling and disseminating social media content, video blogging, content posting photography, documenting department and college events, updating department website information, and designing flyers/other promotional materials. Ideal applicant will possess strong/emerging knowledge of the digital media landscape, including various social media sites. The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to department website content/redesign, optimizing the English department's online visibility through social media outlets, and advertising department events through printed media.
Hourly Pay: approx 5-9/hours per week; $15/hour
Roles and Responsibilities:
Assist in engaging audiences through various social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
Create and post social media content as directed by faculty/staff
Writing, editing, and scheduling department news items for social media
Design flyers/posters in order to promote department/college events
Update English department website: inputting information about faculty and student profiles; faculty and student highlights (awards, publications, visiting or in-residence faculty, etc.); alumni profiles/job placements
Attend and document department/college events through social media platforms
Attend meetings with department faculty and staff about promoting department/college events and opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students
Develop lists for possible stories/department highlights to promote on the department website
Give input on content most valuable, interesting, and engaging for current/prospective undergraduate students
Training new students for the communications assistant position
Qualifications:
Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate at Michigan State University
Must have completed at least 2 years of coursework
Must be in good academic standing with the university
Must be able to attend department/college events when required
Knowledge of Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, and other similar social media outlets
Effective oral and written communication
Ability to work independently
Demonstrated ability to effectively use social media platforms is desired
Experience creating flyers and advertising materials to promote events is desired
Experience running social media for events is desired
