Position details
This is a 12-month, full-time, in-person role based on the UMR campus.
Key Responsibilities
- Building a Student-Centered Safety Culture (70%)
- Provide a safety presence that prioritizes student well-being and belonging.
- Manage a staffing model that supports student needs across academic, residential, and social spaces on a near 24/7/365 schedule whenever students are on campus.
- Implement a campus downtown safe walk, beginning with a peer program whether in person or virtual.
- Serve as a visible, approachable presence on campus through regular walk-throughs and proactive engagement with students.
- Respond promptly and compassionately to safety concerns, emergencies, and student-related incidents using de-escalation techniques. Report facility-related issues promptly.
- Partner with students, parents, and employees to communicate clearly about safety matters, offering education, regular information through campus communications, and reassurance.
- Lead safety workshops, orientation sessions, and training from a public health perspective to empower students to make informed decisions and support one another.
- Participate as a key member of the UMR CARE Team, addressing student well-being and community response with empathy and discretion.
- Advise the Vice Chancellor for Student Life on emerging trends and concerns affecting student safety and success.
- Organize and support campus safety drills, table-top exercises, and emergency preparedness simulations, in collaboration with UMR Facilities, local law enforcement, University of Minnesota System safety colleagues as appropriate.
- Chair UMR’s Campus Safety Committee, engaging students and employees in safety planning and problem-solving.
- Support the UMR Emergency Medical Services (EMS) student organization, assisting with recruitment, training, and volunteer coordination.
- Lead the implementation of weather emergencies, large-scale events, and other disruptions, keeping the community informed and protected.
- Participate in Student Life Operations and Student Life Tuesday Connect meetings.
- Liaison with the Rochester Police Department, University System Partners, Rochester Community Partners.
- Participate in the UTAP sub-committee as a representative of the Rochester campus.
- Other duties as needed to maintain and grow a student-first, wellbeing approach to campus safety.
- Student Worker Team Development (15%)
- Recruit, train, expand, and mentor a team of student workers (Security Monitors), helping them grow in leadership, communication, and crisis response skills - relevant for future health professionals.
- Coach student workers in conflict resolution, de-escalation techniques, and respectful engagement with peers.
- Coordinate public safety logistics for events—working collaboratively with student groups, departments, and community partners.
- Campus Access and Secure Learning Spaces (5%)
- Manage building access systems that balance safety with student autonomy and ease of use, in collaboration with UMR facilities.
- Manage the student ID Card processing system.
- Compliance and Reporting (10%)
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws such as Clery, VAWA, Stop Hazing Act, and Campus SAVE Act, in addition to campus policies and procedures.
- Support the Clery Compliance Coordinator in the preparation of the annual Safety and Security on Campus and Fire Safety Report.
- Maintain the Daily Crime Log and collaborate with the UMR Director of Facilities and University of Minnesota system partners on annual Clery reporting.
- Train Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) and support a culture of transparency and accountability in campus safety.
- Direct responders and/or respond to criminal, medical, and other incidents. Ensure proper reporting and follow-up investigations are complete.
- This is a 12-month, full-time, in-person role based on the UMR campus.
- Flexibility is required to support evening, weekend, and holiday activities when student needs arise.
- Based on campus needs, a second shift 3:00 pm–11:00 pm would be ideal but negotiable.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- BA/BS or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least four years.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Current certification in first aid, CPR, and AED.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in campus security, customer service, student affairs, or community engagement.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to build trust with diverse student populations.
- Calm and clear decision-making in high-stress situations.
- Familiarity with higher education compliance and safety regulations (e.g., Clery, FERPA, Title IX, VAWA).
- Commitment to continuous learning and intercultural development.
- Unquestioned integrity, enacting existing policy, law and procedure in support of the safety of UMR students.
